Studge

Michael Owen, in a rare moment of pertinence, said - as several on here had suggested previously - that he'd felt Sturridge had not been using his old pace in recent games, but any mental barrier had been broken by Saturday's performance. (Interestingly, too, Owen admitted that, when most anxious about his own recurring injuries, he had deliberately moved into positions where he couldn't use his pace, because he'd become so fearful of another hamstring tear.)

It was a fine performance by Studge, and the racing back into our half to try to win the ball was as encouraging as that brilliant assist.

He played a massive part in the first two goals. The distance he ran to win the ball in the lead up to the first was like something Suarez would have done and his run took two people out of the game.

If Sturridge is indeed now back to 'full speed' - as per the comments that Macca refers to on the BT coverage with Michael Owen - and is running and moving at optimum speed without fear or hindrance, then as long as he's stays fit, that's 20 goals at least.

Because a fit, on form and happy Sturridge at 100% is one of the most deadly and effective strikers in the world.

Happy? well thats the big question. The guy has a bitch face most of the time.

A Sturridge playing like he played on Saturday is indeed one of the best strikers in the world, the question is, will he keep that up? It was one of my favourite Sturridge performances I've witnessed, he showed great speed and great intelligence, as you'd expect from him, but he also showed great understanding with the team, great effort, and great selflessness. Sure he didn't score, but goals are a formality with Sturridge, his all round performance was outstanding and that was so encouraging. I think it's the performance so many of us have been dying to see from him, if he keeps playing at that level and style, we're going to have a very very good season.

Problem is you never know how long he's gonna stay fit for. When's the next round of international matches? Thats normally the time when he breaks down.

Thought he was good in the first half but what happened in the second half, he either couldn't or wouldn't sprint, quite alarming really. He wasn't injured and cannot have been fatigued.
In the pre and post match interviews Klopp reiterated over and over again how important Firmino is to the team. Looks like he is second choice to me, not a situation an ego like Studge will want to prolong, I reckon he will be off, which is a massive shame. Or am I just being a hysterical fanny?

Not exactly, but I do think you're putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5. Check out the article by Tony Barrett which Squiggs has posted in another thread.

Yeah I thought it looked more like he was afraid to accelerate in the second half, there was a few times where he could of burnt past his man to get to the ball and just didn't. The fact that Klopp Said the change was tactical possibly reinforces that notion

Klopp did say it was down to fatigue.

From The Times:

Klopp confirmed that Daniel Sturridge was substituted after 57 minutes because of his inability to meet the manager’s physical demands, but it is not thought that the injury-prone striker has suffered another setback.

“I couldn’t see him being able to sprint any more,” Klopp said. “We have a healthy young striker on the bench [Divock Origi] so I went with him. We need this player in the centre who we can play with, and behind the lines.”

Sturridge will always be dangerous because he is a terrific goalscorer.

But he looks half the player he was a season and a half ago.
He cant sprint, he rarely takes players on and that power game he had is all but gone.

Im not sure if thats critical as Klopp plays more passing, touch, technique etc but its clear his burst of pace and drive is not what it was.

Hes still effective and always will be.

Yup but my salient point is that Klopp is quite open that as far as he is concerned Firmino is No 1. Not a situation I would expect Daniel to be happy about

I hope it was just match fitness and fatigue. As for saying he can't sprint, I was worried about that and made a a few posts on the topic, but he showed against Leicester that he still can.

But if he gets to the stage when he does lose pace, mobility and power - permanently - then I would sell him, because it is critical for a central striker in a 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1, I don't care how good a finisher you are, if you can't run you don't play

I'm sure he wouldn't be if it were true, but I don't believe it is. I don't think Sturridge is no.1 either, but fundamentally I don't reckon Klopp will have just the one first choice anyway. He'll make different selections on different occasions.

Indeed. On form and fit, I'd say he's genuinely world class.

I'm actually really happy with what I've seen of Sturridge over the last two games, he's shown a little more of him old self with some great, fast runs and some clever play, but he's also shown that he's starting to fit into Klopps system with hard work and unselfish play. If he's only making it to 60mins in the short term so what, the guy is supremely talented and its only a matter of time until he starts scoring again, and when he does, he'll be a truly terrifying player perfect for Klopps system.

If, despite the clear improvement in his fitness and team play, we still sell the Studge, (a) we'd need to fetch someone else in, (b) we couldn't do that till January when the market isn't favourable and (c) anyone out there within reasonable distance of his talent would cost a ludicrous amount.

Keep.

It seems like you're suggesting there's no such thing as a first XI in modern football [emoji6]

Quite.

He's trying, & succeeding, to adjust his game & style to match the system klopp plays. Which many pundits & fans claimed he couldn't do.

Of course he's knackered early on, cos he's doing way more work than he has before, to great effect. He's a fit athlete, I think he'll be able to manage ninety minutes of it when his body adjusts, especially against teams of lesser quality than Chelsea, where he won't have to work so hard or run quite as much.

Four league games no goals.

Sell.

Right. He got about 2 minutes against Spurs and under an hour at Chelsea, so it's closer to 2 1/2 games. He was shite at Burnley (as was everyone), excellent against Leicester and fairly tidy against Chelsea before fading. It's Sturridge, the goals will come.
