Irrelevant. The fact that it happens to others as well doesn't make it right. A bank account is a necessity nowadays and the right to one is recognised in law. Banks should not be interfering with that because of a customer's political views, whether it be Farage or whoever else. It's not up to them to act as some kind of thought police.
This is why we have chocolate coins.
But the law gives us the right to basic banking services, not the right to open any account at any bank.
That said, those decisions are generally made on financial history, and I rather doubt that Farage would share the profile of most people who have basic bank accounts.
However, these are private companies. All private companies can make decisions based on reputational risk. As long as people have access to what the law entitles them to, why should banks be any different to other private companies?
It's fairly clear that they made the wrong decision here, but I would still just about fall on the side of them being able to make that call.
Shame Corbyn isn't still around. He'd probably have gone for that.
The answer to that bolded question is that, if one bank's permitted to withdraw services from a given individual, there is then no way to prevent the rest of the banking sector from doing the same thing to them, as indeed seems to have happened to Farage. As long as there is a legal right to basic banking services (which there needs to be in this day and age) the law has to apply to all banks in the same way, and that wouldn't be the case if Coutts were held to be within their rights but some other bank further down the line wasn't.

We were told different if you want to avoid making your personal finances vulnerable to business creditors. Maybe things have changed since.
