Sunlit Uplands

how does that get policed and what’s the cost?
No idea. Are they going to stop cars on that stretch of road where you can cross the border 4 times during a ten minute drive? It's meant to start in January, I'll be in Belfast with three people on Greek passports, will they have to do it even though they'll have been in Belfast since before it starts? Does anyone involved in this know anything about Ireland?

I'm starting to think that maybe Brexit wasn't a good idea after all.

Yeah - and is it the same going from NI into the Rep.

This would impact me and the missus as she’s got an Aussie passport.

All this just to keep the DUP from huffing - I don’t know why they bother, the DUP will just find something else to huff about.

Also - does that mean everyone has to carry ID to prove their citizenship?

I suspect it could lead to some racial profiling and people of the "wrong" ethnicity might get stopped and questioned.
Hmm... I think we can get round this. Mrs Athens can do quite a convincing Belfast accent. I'll just get her to say "who are you asking for ID, wee man?" if we get stopped and we'll probably be waved through.

But but Project Fear. And sovereignty. And blue passports made in Poland.

If only all this could have been predicted. The Tories have fucked this country over for the sake of their own internal party politics and their bullshit and lies were sucked up by the gullible, stupid and racists. And they have the gall to call those who voted Remain traitors. Traitors don't want what's best for the country and, let's face it Brexit never was and never will be - and they knew that. It was all about self protection for those at the top and watering down of rights for those at the bottom. A massive series of lies and falsehoods sucked up, believed and spread by the angry and the moronic. Turkeys and Christmas.

in general, older generations is a problem in politics
they vote for some past that will never return and they are afraid
it is their fear of death which is behind the curtain here

Yet want more and more from state because they believe entitled to it, triple locked pensions and immigrants to wipe their arse in care. Simplistic view I know…

It is interesting trying to have this conversation with older generations, like parents.
They have no doubt had it harder when they grew up and now, at least here, they are really well off.

When I point out that the pensions they are getting now aren't sustainable, while underlining that I am not saying they don't deserve it or not, they get defensive and say they deserve it. I'd say everyone deserve a good retirement, but the degree of purchasing power and lifestyle they can afford is too much in the long run. They can go to Spain/Africa/America, wherever they want, 4 times a year, buy cabins, new cars. Not having to think about money at all, really.

Yes… it’s the Tory strategy to increase productivity and manage inflation - work harder and longer for less money.

The UK state pension is one of the worst in Europe. The UK government contributes significantly less as a proportion of GDP towards pensions than most European countries and we have higher levels of pension poverty than most European countries. The average replacement rate in the EU is 71%, while the UK's is 58%. The state pension is absolutely sustainable, even with the triple lock (which has only come under such scrutiny because of record levels of inflation). Much like austerity, it's a political choice to deprive people, not an economic one.

It's mad what's happening in this country. Hostage to maniacs. We need to get rid of these cunts ASAP, unforts I can't imagine Starmer will be any better.

A quick look at Corbyn's last election pledge looks like a dream. Missed a opportunity there. The fake anti-semitism line that was run worked too well.

It wasn’t a fake line though - Corbyn had as many nutters running around and was the Tories greatest asset - so great, Sunak still practically mentions him every week at PMs Questions.

I don’t get the Starmer hate - he’s boring and certainly on the right side of the Labour spectrum, but he at least looks like he has some integrity and cares without having views that absolutely anyone could call pungent.

He has to play the game to avoid giving the right leaning media the ammunition they need to get the Tories re-elected - they’re struggling to get any sort of coherent attack line going against him.

It’s either Starmer or you’ll see Boris back in power before you know it.

It was fake in the respect that the totally acceptable stance of being anti-Israel and the totally unacceptable stance of being anti-semitic are now blurred, confused and somehow combined. That's complete bollocks.
