Good lad!

Fresh from an invaluable season of experience in his home country, Liverpool midfielder Suso has returned to pre-season training this week with a singular vision: to stay and fight for a place.

After a breakthrough campaign in 2012-13 courtesy of Brendan Rodgers' faith in young players, the talented playmaker actively sought a loan switch last summer to further his development.

Almeria and La Liga were the destination of choice and a helpful one too; Suso clocked up 35 appearances in all competitions, contributing three goals to the cause to avoid relegation.

Now back at Melwood, the 20-year-old believes his season away from Anfield improved his performance level and he's determined to prove that claim to Rodgers and the fans.

"After the season in Spain, I think I have become a better player - I learned a lot," Suso told Liverpoolfc.com as the first week of sessions concluded in West Derby.

"Obviously Liverpool are going to sign a lot of players because we are in the Champions League this season, and we have to have a good squad because there are a lot of competitions.

"But if I fight for my place, I do my best every day in training and when I have the chance to come on or start a game, if I do well, I could have chances to play a lot of minutes in the first team.

"I came here in December at Christmas when I had my week of holidays. In Spain, we have a one-week break at Christmas and I came here for two or three days to have a meeting with the manager.

"He talked to me, said he was happy with what I was doing and said that this season he wants me to stay here. I want to stay here and sign a new deal.

"For me, there is no bigger club than Liverpool. The crowd, the people, the stadium and the Kop - that's a feeling that you cannot explain. You have to live that just to know what you feel.

"It's a really good experience. Last season I was at many stadiums and I never saw a stadium like Anfield. My option is to stay here, sign a new contract and fight for my place."

Based in another country he may have been, but Suso was following the Reds' exploits closely last season, as a long-awaited championship narrowly eluded Rodgers' free-flowing team.

He said: "I was following every Liverpool game, watching every game, and I was really happy when I saw that Liverpool were winning, top of the league and could win the Premier League.

"It's a big difference - Liverpool fighting to win the league and we were fighting to not get relegated. But that's the difference between a small club and a big club like Liverpool.

"In this case, you appreciate the big things that a club like Liverpool do. Living in another city was a big difference but it was good for me to see the difference and appreciate this club as well."

In conversation with Suso, it becomes noticeable how many times the No.30 uses the word 'learn', repeatedly stressing the necessity to evolve and improve under any circumstances.

Analysing the 12 months he spent representing the shirt of Almeria, the Cadiz native considers the education - though different to life on Merseyside - to have been hugely beneficial.

"When I was here in Liverpool the season before last, I played a lot of minutes here and I was really happy, because to be 18 or 19 years old and playing in the first team of Liverpool is a big thing," the Spain youth international added.

"But I wanted to play every week, full games, and I did that last season. I started every game except for five or six games, and I was really happy because the team did not get relegated to the Second Division. That was important.

"I learned a lot in every game and every week in training, with some other players - maybe not the same quality as here, but they were good.

"I enjoyed it so much because I wanted to get minutes, and to go on loan for one year just to play football. I knew that if I stayed here, I'd maybe play a lot less than I did last season.

"So I wanted to go on loan and get some experience in the First Division. We all know that in Spain the First Division is really hard, like here in England. I wanted to go to get minutes and experience back in Spain.

"That's why I went on loan - to learn. Every time I come here for training, I try to learn from the players. Last season in Spain, all I wanted to do was get minutes. I played with other players, older players, on the pitch. What I tried to do was to learn."

Good lad. He's got a huge job on his hands to force his way into the team regularly but I really hope his efforts pay off.

There's a really good footballer in there.

I dunno what the future holds for young Suso but he sure is saying all the right things.

I hope he gets given a go this season, I know the competition is fierce, but he's got the talent to be that deep lying playmaker we're looking for, he could well step into Gerrard's shoes in some games.

Agree with this. Don't think he's incisive enough in the final third to become an excellent attacking midfielder. Didn't he excel for the Spanish under 21's in this position?

Yeah, his long range passing and his passing in general seems to flourish when he's deeper. When he's on form he's great at pulling the strings in that position. He does need to learn to impose himself a bit more, I don't think his build helps, but he's definitely got the ability.

Would be great if he makes it through. He's been on the radar for such a long time.

He seemed to do ok when I watched him in La Liga last season and he's definitely worth a place in the squad

Always the same problem for me with Suso: a strange mix of attributes. His best bet probably is as some kind of Alonso type, but I really doubt he'll ever have the physical presence to make a really good job of it.

His contract is running down with a year to go. I expect that we'll offer him a new deal, but I'm unsure if he's going to seek assurances about playing time before signing. Just a few months ago, the noises reportedly coming from him were more like "play me or sell me please".

All this learning he's blathering on about, hopefully if it included learning how to tackle, learning how to commit undetectable fouls, or learning how to be fouled himself, any of the three and he'll soon be playing plenty of games for us.

If we'd just signed him there'd be youtube clips galore. He's a fantastic prospect and he's going to get better and better. He's probably too close to home to appreciate at present, but it's great that we have him.

I'd like to see suso and Borini get a fair crack this season, I think both bring something to the table and would ultimately save £20m In speculative replacements without fully knowing whether either of suso or Borini will make it here when given a fair , proper chance.

There will certainly be enough games to do so.

Completely agree with all of it and the line in bold in particlar. We've seen glimpses of the talent and when you think of what we spent on Aspas and Alberto last summer to no avail both Suso and Borini definitely deserve their respective shots at coming back here. If there are plans in pace to bring in those speculative signings you speak of I think it's preferable to hold the money, sell Aspas and Alberto and bring in a player in the 20 million category with the combined funds.

I'm happy with Suso's fighting talk. Let him stay and fight for his place. He is better that Luis Alberto and will thrive in the current set-up. He has an eye for a pass and can improve his tackling no end.

He wants to earn his new deal which is great.

He should be playing where Coutinho does when he lines up in a three-man midfield - ahead of the deep lying playmaker, but not the furthest forward.

I saw a lot of the clips of him that I think @Modo posted throughout the season but still don't know an awful lot about him.

Would he be offering competition to the CM roles that currently Hendo and Allen occupy? Or is he a more attacking winger? Or more suited to be a holder? In the clips he just seemed to be all over the pitch!

IMO that's the problem. I've got no idea where he'd be best.

His long passing is brilliant, as is his close control and dribbling. His creative passing around the box is not as good but still very decent. His shooting is only average. He's got no pace, not much stamina or power, and can't tackle. He's probably best somewhere in CM, but he needs to really develop his physicality to make it there in the PL IMO.

I saw a lot of him last season at Almeria and he was mainly used as a right winger in a 4-3-3 system.
Started off great, was their most important player during the first half of the season.
I've seen him play for the u19s and the u21s as well and where he sometimes is deployed in a central playmaking role.
The kid still has a lot of potential. There's not many players in our squad who can hold on and shield the ball like he does but he is somewhat of a ballhog.
His distribution and crossing can be magnificent but he takes too many touches at times which kills the momentum. This can be fixed of course.

I still think he can offer us something.

Pointless writing the lad off before giving him a chance. Most of us done the same with hendo and look at him now.

If anyone can improve Suso, then its BR

What's even more perplexing is that Suso has more natural talent than Henderson, Allen and Lucas. He's just not got the physique, which is why he's been shunted around positions, because teams can't afford him the luxury of playing in the middle but being a bit of a passenger. When we played him there against Everton and Chelsea, the season before last, he ran both games. You don't do that unless you're (potentially) a bit special.
