Is it too early to start this?

I think some rotation is necessary for this game, plus an unconvincing performance from many players gives Rodgers a good excuse to make a few changes.

I would stick with Can at RCB, he played well after coming on and deserves to be given a chance to establish himself. Also I am really tempted to find someone to replace Skrtel as the middle CB. Lately he's been very poor defensively, arguably at fault for both goals against Arsenal and made a whole string of mistakes yesterday (although he partially redeemed himself a couple of good interventions late on). Rodgers will probably stick with Skrtel, but I would consider playing Toure as the middle CB with Can and Sakho both sides of him. Another option would be to give one more chance to Lovren, but I'm not sure it's the right time for that yet.

At LWB I think Markovic definitely needs a rest, particularly after he played the whole 90 minutes yesterday, which is unusual for him. Step up Moreno. At RWB Henderson looks mentally and physically fatigued – step up Manquillo. Like I said before, wing-back is the most energy-draining position on the pitch and it's better to rotate than to field same players on a short rest.

So, my back 5:

Manquillo--Can-Toure-Sakho--Moreno

Gerrard definitely needs to be rested. But what can we do if Allen is still injured, Can starts in defense, and Hendo plays at RWB lately and also needs to be rested? I would go to the system Rodgers used at home vs West Brom in October – move Coutinho back to the deep-lying playmaker role, alongside Lucas, with another midfielder (Lallana – in the West Brom game it was Henderson) making constant runs forward from the tip of the "triangle" and trying to get on the end of Coutinho's passes. This system would not work against Burnley or Stoke, but it can work against teams that "play football" and don't press overly aggressively: teams such as Swans.

So, midfield 3:

--Lucas-Coutinho--
-------Lallana--------

Finally, the front 2 depends on whether Sterling needs a rest. If not, then I would go with him and Balotelli up front. If yes, then probably Borini and Balotelli.

---------Can-Toure-Sakho---------
Manquillo-------------------Moreno
-----------Lucas-Coutinho----------
----------------Lallana-----------------
------Sterling(Borini)--Balotelli----

You know what - I'm all for changing the team as little as possible.

A consistent team, playing together regularly should be the way forward, with only changes made those forced upon us by injury.

There is a temptation to chop and change loads, but if resist, because it means we'll probably go back to square one in terms of improvement.

Besides, we all know that Rodgers will rest key players for the FA Cup next week - so Gerrard, Sterling, etc will get to rest then.

Sure, but do you think the team I proposed is weaker than the completely "unchanged" team playing on 2 days rest? I am trying to select the strongest possible team, not trying to rest players. As for FA cup, I hope Rodgers puts out his best team to try to win the competition we have a real chance of winning.

I can see him making maybe 1-2 changes.

Can will start and maybe Moreno for Markovic but doutbful.

The midfield is too lightweight for me. I can't see Rodgers dropping skrtel and i'd rather Can in that midfield with lucas. Rodgers has already said Balotelli can't play in our current system so there's no point him starting at all. Only changes i'd make to the current team would be moreno for markovic and Can for gerrard. More than likely if fit lovren would come in for toure.

Yes I do think your team is weaker - in the basis if 5 changes & weakening central midfield.

I get what you're saying, but changing the team unnecessarily, to rest players, is one of the reasons we got in to this mess in the first place - I don't know why people think making wholesale changes will work better now.

Getting some sort of consistency is the only way this will work.

Besides - we don't play till Monday night - so 3 clear days rest, followed by a home game against Leicester (forgot about that one) - I wouldn't weaken the team for a tough game against Swansea.

It's possible we'll be forced to bake changes anyway - was Toure injured?

-------------------Mignolet---------------
Manquillo--Skrtel--Sakho--Enrique
-------------------Can--------------------
----------Lallana-----Coutinho---------
--Sterling-----Lambert-----Markovic

Agree with Ruirk's back 5. Swansea have a rapid LW who tore Chambers a new one the other week and I'd rather have Manquillo than Henderson there.

I'd like to see:

---------------------SOMEONE ELSE-----------------
----------------Can-----Toure----Sakho---------------
--Manquillo-----------Lucas----------------Moreno--
----------------Henderson---Coutinho----------------
------------------------Sterling--------------------------
------------------------Balotelli-------------------------

I thought Balo looked positive against United and would like to see him come out with something to prove.

If Rodgers really thinks that Mignolet is out "indefinitely" then who is our next GK? Get him in.

Last year before Suarez came back, we won a few games 1-0 that we had no business winning (stoke 1-0, villa 1-0 etc). Tough, hard fought games ... Once Suarez came back, we went on a lovely run ...

Granted, it's not the start of the season, and a run to the league is as likely as Ali winning another boxing match, but hopefully the stage is being set for a team that is learning to win again and once Studge comes back, lift off .. until he gets injured.

I'm a tit. I've gone & booked tickets for the pictures at 8 tomorrow thinking we played today. Only realised this afternoon.

Fucking bellend. I'll have to switch my phone off & watch the recorded match when I get in.

Won't you be coming out the pics and the fans from the match at the same time ? Are you going to wear earplugs and have Becky blindfold you ?
