Re: Site outages

RMA - will do. I've blocked all spiders now apart from Google. That should reduce load. Plus I've restricted guest views as well.

Makes me wonder if it's time to restrict new member registration and set a maximum amount of members restriction.
Maybe its time to start removing users who've been inactive for a long period of time.

Re: Site outages

Inactive users don't really affect us Modo nor do new members. We're not a closed shop. It's number of concurrent users as well as somme other geek related factors that I wont bore you with.

Well I thought that guests might circumvent the restriction by registering and somehow cause heavy traffic that way.
I've got a masters degree in IT and media communication so it wouldn't really bore me but I'd be too lazy to help.

The last thing any of the owners want is for us to be a closed shop.

If we were we wouldn't have any of the new members who contribute so much, Krump is an example of a new member (relatively speaking) who has breathed new life into the site & helped shake things up a bit.

With no change we become stale, tired, predictable & people some here less & less. That's not to say we want to become a different site, our ethos remains the same, but people who can come here & add to that are always most welcome, & in my view, essential to us being here.

Re: Site outages

Good point. However users who've been inactive for let's say a year can surely be removed in order to know exactly how many active users there are. For statistical purposes maybe.

They could be. But it would take fucking ages to sort out.

Re: Site outages

If possible, temporarily hire a few "cleaning mods" with the power to delete inactive accounts. I'm sure some people would get off on the power trip for awhile 🙂

Surely some clever fucker has coded an add-on for something similar. I know something exists to bug you if you havent been active for a while on some forums, cos I get shitloads of them bugging me!

Ross, keep away from those permission buttons.

Re: Site outages

Hahaha ;D

I only wanted it so I could chat Livvy up anyway. His loss.

Re: Site outages

We're doing plenty of research and considering all options at the moment lads.

We'd prefer not to take money from people for the site, although we do appreciate the offers, so if we can find a good deal where we don't need any contributions we'll be taking that. If we can't, we may well come back with the begging bowl ! 🙂
