Interesting Wiki entry:

Scott Wootton:
Having started his career in Tranmere Rovers Centre of Excellence, at the age of 13 he moved to Liverpool. He played for the Liverpool Under 18 side at the age of 14, but frustrated at the number of young overseas players bought in by Rafael Benítez, he turned down a scholarship at the age of 16, deciding instead to switch to Manchester United in 2007.

Went to lfchistory.net to check, and by the time Wootton left, Benitez had signed 5 young centrebacks, 4 foreign (Paletta, San Jose, Daniel Ayala, Jack Hobbs and the late Roque). Speaking of Roque, I just realized that the late Besian Idrizaj was brought to Liverpool in the same season as Roque.

Sad stats indeed.

Never heard of Wootton before.

If you're not prepared to fight for you chance, do we really want players like him anyway?

I don't agree with that.

You have to balance belief in yourself with cold hard pragmatism. If bought in overseas players are being favoured by management and you don't think there is a level playing field then moving on can be the right thing to do.

And I do remember hearing a few people saying that they did feel like there wasn't a level playing field and Liverpool was not a good place for local English lads to be because they weren't going to get opportunities.

That's annoying isn't it?

Considering none of the above mentioned CB's made it while he now looks like he is going to break into the Utd team.

It was clear there was a view during Ged's time, and into the early years of Rafa's time, that local kids would have their progress blocked here. I can't even remember Wootton being at the club, though - maybe he was a late developer (wasn't he at Tranmere for a while?). Who knows, sometimes they just slip through the net, but he seems to have decided to leave pretty early.

He's only about to break into their team because they're utterly fucked for options.

This isn't a Leighton Baines moment... yet...

Not exactly true actually. Paletta clearly didn't cut it here. San Jose is the regular starting CB at Bilbao. I thought Ayala would've been kept on as he looked to be improving but somehow Kenny cut him. Both him and Hobbs are playing at the Championship now though (Ayala on loan from Norwich), Hobbs a regular there. Roque was playing for Betis before he passed away.

Besides, let's not go overboard about this guy's chances at United yet. He's had one cameo appearance in the CL, and started one League Cup game. That doesn't mean he's breaking through. Paletta, Hoobs and Ayala all played games for us as well. Also, United bought Smalling and Jones last season and they should be ahead of him in the pecking order; whether he can get a sniff when they're back (and with Evans already there) is still questionable.

What a rubbish attitude at the age 16, sounds like conforming to the stereotype Harry Redknapp mentioned. At the age 16, rather than learning his trade and getting better, he decided to give up and move already. Good riddance, at the age 16 he should be only be looking at first team players in the first team and concentrate how he could get better and who can learn from, not others in the academy regardless of nationality.

Not really, couldn't really give a shit. We have plenty of youngsters who look good, missing out on one who may make it doesn't really bother me.

1 year younger than Martin Kelly but with shit attitude, I'm glad he moved on. While Kelly has established himself as a first team regular but this guy is still nowhere near it.

Vidic, Smalling and Jones out means he is now making the bench for them is all.

Centre Back is one of those areas that I think we're reasonably well covered for over the next few years.

Agger
Skrtel
Coates
Carra (for 1 year maybe)
Kelly
Wisdom
And whatever other kids are coming through.

That's good enough.
