There were reports that Slot was keen to keep Diaz and offer him a new contract, but the club made the sale. I can kinda believe that. As it's been a big part of the problem, it's one area I've generally sympathised with Slot on.

if that’s true then i have sympathy with slot because that’s a purely financial decision and it seems like it should be up to the dof to restore the team back to par after something like that.

but the knock on did slot ok/choose/prioritise two massively expensive 9’s over a replacement winger?

i just don’t understand enough about how the head coach / director of football relationship is supposed to work and what the boundaries are.

take frimpong for example. he played as part of a back 5 at leverkusen didn’t he? so the dof and stats people like most of his stats because he’s being effective in a high performing side, they also like his price and that he’s seemingly easy to get. i’m sure he has poor stats too in terms of strength at the very least.

do they present all this to the coach and say listen we think he fits a back 4 we’re going for him?

or do they drop a list in slots lap of who the algorithm rates, their pros/cons and how easy it will be to sign them… you choose arne?

who’s the adult in the room that points out the pl is a mad house, frimpong is built like a 15 year old boy and he will be playing in a system that will likely expose him?

Frimpong is the one who bothers me the most. I have limited knowledge of players who play for others. But in Spring, I was channel-surfing and happened to watch the Spain-Netherlands game. After the game, I posted here that I hoped we wouldn't go for Frimpong, as he doesn't seem built for the PL and wasn't the best defender.

Then, as our links with him grew stronger, I did a 10-minute Google search and found that his best games were in a completely different formation, and that he had not played in a traditional back four. Moreover, his passing is not that great.

I have the same doubts as you? What was the process that led to signing Frimpong? Who pushed for it - Slot, Hughes?

the only thing that makes sense to me is that slot said he liked the player and could make it work. if that’s not the case and all these players were bought by committee or stats then i probably owe slot an apology but i just can’t see a world where he’s not at least given veto powers.

Frimpong has barely played this season, he certainly not played much during the 9 losses.

There's an article in the Guardian today that suggests Slot has "input" into transfers, but not final say. This would take things back to the way it worked under Brendan (Klopp had a veto over transfers - committee could recommend players but if he said "no" then it didn't happen - I've mentioned before that Robbo was a committee signing that Klopp didn't object to but it wasn't him driving the deal).
I think this may be a stumbling block in appointing any new manager (and may also be why we've delayed pulling the trigger up to now). I suspect Edwards only agreed to come back to the club on condition that this would be the structure, but it also means that you're not going to get a Klopp-level manager because they won't put up with that model.

What irritates me most is that Hughes and Slot had a full season to identify and secure the right targets. The whole point of holding back on investment when he arrived was to assess the squad, agree a plan, and avoid rushed decisions. Yet here we are with a mismatched squad that fits no clear plan. I would be slightly more understandable if these decisions were taken in Slots first full summer.

Contract-wise, age and fee, I understand the decision. Not replacing him is the problem.
