The world's first £100m player

It's surely just a matter of time before someone is transferred for >£100m.

When do we think it will happen?
Will it be Real? Another continental club? Man City?
Will it be a player we already know, like Messi? Or someone who's right now playing for Hartlepool under 14s or some exotic equivalent?

Tough one. Can't really see Messi ever leaving Barca. And there isn't really anyone out there worth £100million who would leave their respective clubs.

I'm not so sure, mainly because of Man City. If they get their squad up to a certain level where they only need to buy a couple of players a season - they might pay something like that for Messi or whoever the equivalent of Messi or Ronaldo is in 3 years.

i don't think it's necessarily imminent. zidane's record stood for 8 years - i think when it does happen it'll be in 10 years or so and be on a player no-one's ever heard of.

As long they have that approach, the record will be broken within two seasons i'd say.

I don't necessarily think Messi will stay at Barca forever. He'll need a new challenge eventually. Still doubt he'll break the 100 M GBP mark though. It'll take a while before that happens. While City will continue to throw ridiculous transfer fees around for the next couple seasons, if and when they actually establish themselves as a credible team, they won't need to break records to attract players. Players will go there for chances at medals and glory. If they don't succeed in establishing themselves as a team that can deliver that opportunity, they won't be able to sustain such spending, rich bankrollers or not.

I think it all depends on Man City.

If it weren't for them, I'd say that Ronaldo's record would stand for a long time because the Ronaldo - Real deal is very rare and is unlikely to come around again for a while.

But if there is a massive star Man City want enough and have a chance of getting him - like Pato or Ribery for example - they won't think twice about it.

I'm still very sure Pato will be the next global superstar. He's still relatively young and already progressing well but still a rough gem in many ways.

Give him 2-3 more years and he'll be the hottest property in world football.
