They were two of probably the three hardest players who ever played for us (Jimmy Case being the other one), but otherwise no. Although Tommy Smith started out as a midfield player he pretty soon became a defender (CB mostly, RB late on in his career) and, although Portly is quite right in what he says about Smith's footballing ability, Souness definitely had more to his attacking game.
It's not possible to defend what Smith said on the subject of race, but some of his reported personal unpleasantness in later life may well have been due to the fact that by that stage he was in constant pain from severe arthritis and eventually developed dementia. In footballing terms, as Shanks' next captain after big Ron Yeats he did a lot to help establish the glory days. In fairness the good should be remembered alongside the bad IMO.
I didn't know about his racist stuff etc but I'm late to this thread because I never liked him, for no reason other than my dad and uncles used to shudder and swear a lot whenever his name came up. They drank in the same pubs and said you couldn't meet a worse human.
