Why is the club's wage bill so high?
The likes of PSG and Juve who have stars on their books that earn £300-£500k a week still have a lower wage bill. Real Madrid has a wage bill only £2m more than Liverpool but the turnover is several hundred millions more.
1. Barcelona - £438 million
2. Manchester United - £332 million
3. Manchester City - £315 million
4. Real Madrid - £312 million
5. Liverpool - £310 million
6. Bayern Munich - £292 million
7. Paris Saint-Germain - £290 million
8. Chelsea - £285 million
9. Juventus - £281 million
10. Arsenal - £230 million

You pay peanuts you get monkeys. What? Our stars shouldn't be paid what they are getting?

What's the source

+ bonuses and sign on fees would play a part. We've been getting players to extend contracts.

Yeah, that doesn't look right. Smaller squad and fewer stars than Real and City, but similar wage bill?

I wonder how it's progressed as a % of turnover, that's the crucial measure you want to keep fairly static.

It's from 2019's accounts (so it won't include the Champions League win bonuses as the final was after the year end). However, it also WILL include all staff and some of the figures above may be players only. It's not a perfect comparison but for sure our playing wage bill will be comfortably in the top 10.
City's presumably won't include the player image rights (which could easily be £30m) as they are, per Der Spiegel / Football Leaks, paid through another company to keep the costs down (which UEFA didn't bother to challenge).

3rd highest in England as champions? Not bad. It'll also likely be down a couple of places next year based on rumoured/completed transfers (eg. our outs vs Chavs ins). Without the % of revenue stat it's a bit silly to get worked up about it. Last I checked it was about 59% and it'll likely be nearer 55% this year, very reasonable.

Wage bill has a much higher correlation with on field success than transfer kitty. Source: some LSE dude about 10 years ago

Its the most reliable predictor of success over the longer term. Which tells you that Utd and City are not going anywhere, as long as they pay massive wages they will be competitive.

I'm assuming Chelseas wage bill is going to sky rocket next years based on the players they are supposedly signing.

UEFA's ranking sound more plausible

Per the accounts our 2018 wage bill (all staff) was 263.6m GBP so the Euro figure looks about right.
Over the last 3 published years, our wage bill has gone up massively from £208.3m in 2017, to £263.6m in 2018 and then to £310m in 2019.
When you throw in the Champions League success in 2020 I expect it will be higher again.

So it's gone up over £100m in 2 seasons? What the hell.

Lallana and Lovren leaving the club have reduced the wage bill by 10 million a year.
You would think that. No guarantee we'll find a buyer or another club to loan out Karius. Several key players have signed bumper new deals, so I expect wages to be even higher.

I think the basic wages is actually relatively small compared to other big teams but we structure healthy bonuses for players and since we have been doing well lately I guess that means our wage bill has gone up. For example it's reported that Werner is going to get 200k which puts him on the same or more than VVD, but VVD bonuses for thinks like clean sheets and win bonuses means that he is getting much more than good basic wages.

High wage bill or not - we really need to replace Lovren, and also we need to buy someone who is going to be a creative force in midfield, and I don't know about you guys - I think we have had issues up front this season, I really think we need to have someone who will slowly be able replace at least one of our front three eventually - at times it became all too predictable and Salah is heavily marked now, and hardly gets any penalty calls.

Wrong post. There's like 3 posts on transfers, or you could start one like "Salah out and Sancho in"

And the high wages are as things ought to be for what we have achieved.

Finally FSG has given Klopp what he has always [desperately] wanted-- the ability to keep his best players instead of seeing them being perennially poached by his main league rival. The one player he lost, albeit to a rival abroad, was sold at a fee high enough to make eyes water and actually led to the team's improvement so that it finally clinched major honours in consecutive years.

No wonder that we're not buying anyone. Entire budget going to wages.

I suspect this is the issue with Wjinaldums contract, alot of our star players got improved contracts after Madrid and he didnt. If reports are accurate hes on £95k per week. For comparison Lovren was on £110k per week, Naby is on £120k. Hes probably under paid by market value. But the club cant keep offering everybody improved terms so if Wjinaldum wants to be paid big wages hes likely going to have to move on.

I have to say Wijnaldum's 4 goals and 0 assists in 35 appearances this season in the league does not look good. Of course stats don't tell the whole story but in comparison, Henderson has 4 goals and 5 assists. Fabinho even has 2 goals and 3 assists as DM.
I'm well aware of the fact Wijnaldum isn't deployed as an attacking midfielder so I'm happy about the amount of goals he's scored but 0 assists just isn't good enough.
I'm confident that we want to extend his contract but I'm starting to think that he's maybe asking for too much.
Don't get me wrong, Wijnaldum is one of my favourite players. When he's on the ball he gives me Barnes vibes, probably has the best ball control in our team and makes us tick. But he's not irreplaceable and he's 30 in a few months with an outgoing contract.

Really? Like, really?!

I’m a fan of Gini, but for me he’s almost the opposite of Barnesy - who I remember as an edge of my seat/ sense of anticipation/ crowd on tenterhooks/ excitement player. Gini is almost the opposite... blink and you miss him, underestimated, neat and tidy, keep the ball moving, take up good spaces, team man.

Maybe it’s a generational thing, and I’m just well old and you mean the centre midfield John Barnes at the end of his career with us.

I'm talking about his ball control and yes the Barnes that primarily played in the middle.

I really think Gini is a crucial, if sometimes invisible, cog in our midfield and if he were to leave, we would have at the very least have a wobble, where the balance is off and the results suffer at least for a few games until Klopp figures out how to compensate for his absence. He's also the most durable of our midfielders and that's why he played the most minutes among them by far – I think he should play less (and would probably look fresher and more adventurous if he did), but I really hope he stays at least until we win the #20.

Agreed. It's his ball retention really gives the team a breather. He never loses it and that's been important. Klopp has reduced our reliance on pressing to win games, shifting to a more pragmatic approach which gave us a better chance of going the distance for a title. Gini has certainly been key to that and would be a loss.

There’s no way Chelsea, with the size of their squad are less than us.

Arsenal have a player on 350k a week, our top earner is shy of 200k...
