Ronaldo and Walcott were both playing regularly in the top flight from 17.
How old is Raheem?

[/quote]

I think a few sub outings and carling cup footbal should definatly be on the agenda next season.

Re: Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

That goal is fucking obscene

Wow

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

yeah , i didn't realise that he won't be 17 until December ...so there's no hurry in getting him in the first team . He hasn't played reserve team football yet so I'd say they have a good plan on how to manage him .

And he's not a total weakling , he can hold lads off ....but obviously it's a whole different strength level in the first team .

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

Holding off lads is one thing, getting up and recovering after a dirty challenge is another. At 16 there is no rush to push him in, As mentioned a few Carling cup, that new U19 CL thing and maybe a bit towards the end of the season if he continues to progress over the season.

How many of those involved tonight were LFC lads?

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

Sterling and Smith started. Regan and Morgan came on in the 2nd half.

Rahem, Dunn and Bedford stayed on the bench.

Raheem and Sterling is Doc Macs legacy for scm.

Lets not sign the mata. Lets give one of these lads a shot.

I was hoping it had been forgotten I was the source of Raheem and Sterling's bifurcation.

I think the lad is properly boss.

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

With regards to his size, I think the club is purposely not letting him do any weight training in order to let him grow naturally, he's only 16.
He'll be bigger, broader and a couple inches taller when he's 18-19 years old.

Well he seemed to get up OK after couple of fairly agricultural challenges by Rwandans.

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

I have mixed feelings on what to do with the lad for the best. On one hand he is very young, on the other he seems to be an immense talent.
Rooney was only about his age , but was a pit bull man-child, and suffered no physical harm playing at that level. Michael Owen is another sixteen/seventeen year old, but has a different injury story, the same with Gerrard although again a bit older 18. The question is had Owen and Gerrard been more nurtured as youngsters would it have made any difference to them as far as injuries go, I would say no.
I don't think his physicality is as much an issue as some think, he seems quite a tough little cookie to me.

I say if a player is good enough to play in the first team, play him, don't be stupid with him, but blood him and give him games.

regards

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

I had to look it up, I guess I was wrong, it's not that "risky" to start training with weights at that age.

Weight Training for Young Adults

Jay H. Williams, Ph.D.

SAFETY ISSUES

The first question surrounding youth weight training is, “is it safe for the young athlete?” The answer to that question is a resounding yes, with one caveat. Research studies that examined the effects of weight training on children and adolescents report only the rare occurrence of injuries. When injuries do occur, they are usually muscle strain or lower back pain and are often resolved within 5 days. The most common cause is poor technique (more on this later). Reported injury rates for youth strength training are small, on the order of less than 1 per 1000 participant hours. This is roughly 80% lower than rates reported for participation in youth soccer and other sports, 4-5 per 1000 hours of play. As for long-term or chronic injuries, radiographic bone scans and plasma analyses of bone, muscle and connective tissue changes show no indications of damage to epiphyses (growth plates), articular cartilage (joint surfaces), tendon, ligament or muscle. Particularly important is that there is no evidence to suggest any adverse effects of weight training on musculoskeletal growth, development, flexibility or performance of young athletes.

The important caveat to consider is proper supervision and adequate instruction. The majority of injuries that occur do so as a result of poor technique.

EFFECTIVENESS

The second question asked is, “is weight training effective?” Research indicates that in children as young as age 6 to adolescents as old as age 18, weight training improves both muscular strength and physical performance. Training programs of 8-12 weeks typically elicit strength gains of 30-50%. In a recent study on young soccer players (12-15 years), weight lifting added to a soccer training program resulted in significant increases in both upper and lower body strength by more than 50%, sprint and shuttle run speed by 3-5% and vertical jump height by 23%. These results indicate that weight training incorporated as a part of a comprehensive soccer training program can improve strength, agility and speed.

Walcott wasn't playing regularly then mate.
And Ronaldo was a lot bigger and stronger than our young Gary Coleman here.

Let's nurse him through the right way.

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

That lad seems like a real talent, that goal was marvelous. Hard to believe he isn't even 17 yet, he was born in 1994. That was fucking yesterday for fuck's sake. Give him time to mature and get a bit bigger and don't rush him into anything just yet.

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

I think we can give him some time in the Carling Cup off the bench this season... see how he does and take it from there.

It'll be interesting to see how he does in the reserves also.

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

i know our scouting system gets a hard time every now and again...

but he is a cracking find... a lot of the young players found under Rafa were superb.

Some have moved on now... but there was no denying their potential. Duran, Dalle Valle, Hobbs, Antwi...

Its always difficult to know if they can make that step up, many obviously dont - but there is no doubt that they had a certain spark.

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

*Can we change the title of the thread to something a bit more general about the tourno and then keep the talk about the U17s in here?

On topic: Great goal that one Raheeeeeeeeeeeem.

I watched him a fair bit during the U17 EC last month and he failed to impress me that much to be honest. He could've of course just've had a few off days - I firmly believe so. Nice to see him get going yesterday.

I'm going to watch Denmark v Brasil tonight and I'm looking forward to see not only how the young Danes fare but to see whether there are some new Ronaldos (the real one) and Ronaldinhos coming through Brazilian ranks.

Re: Raheem vs Rwanda live!

he blows hot and cold a little bit to be honest, he's never bad but when he's not on form he can lose possesion now and then, of course when he's on form he's amazing

If he is good enough he is old enough, if as people say this lad is gonna be a star i think we should definitely get him in the team, we haven't had a good wonderkid since Owen.

I'd rather we gave him a try than buy in random dross, and i'm not sure of the lets protect him logic tbh....

Good, keep us posted.
I'll change the thread title but to be fair it really was Raheem vs Rwanda. Every dangerous attack England had was either created by or involved Raheem. But not Sterling for some reason.

Good to know mate. Promising signs indeed. From Raheem.

i'm getting carried away about sterling. he's not at messi's level yet, but there's just so much to like: electric pace, wizard tekkers, crossing, finishing; overall simply a wonderfully phat vibe.

he can't not make it.

At 16, you're still growing. It's important to let his body fully develop and, as a result, he should not get overused. Blood him in the team by all means but it should be on an exception basis not a regular one. People use Owen and Fowler as examples as good enough old enough but they succumbed to career ruining injuries far too early in their career and I fully believe they were played too often at too young age and that significantly contributed to that

It's hard not to get carried away to be fair. He's under the guidance of the coach who developed a young Messi, so that's in his favour. I think after Suarez and Gerrard, he's the most technically gifted player at the club.

I thought tekkers was filtered?

I agree though Peter, Sterling does have amazing tekkers and that goal last night was sublime.

Hopefully he gets a bit of first team cup action at some point this season.
