UCL Marseille (A) Weds January 21st 20:00

Where do we go from here?

3 points is a must.

Salah back? I'd be tempted with

Ali

Frimpomg
Konate
Virgil
Kerkez

Gravy
Jones
Szoboszlai

Wirtz
Ekitike
Salah

I think that's the team we should start most games with for the next while.

Not sure 3 points is a must though, would be nice, but far more important matches to come.

The worst criticism I have is that until the match starts, I don't care. Then I care, then I remember, then I'm angry, then I go back to not caring. It's not exactly a rollercoaster. It's more like waiting in line for a rollercoaster and being told it is closed for repairs, but it´s your fault, because you walked past enough signs saying its shut.

This is a huge game for us. Win it and we're basically guaranteed to qualify directly for the next round with only Qarabag at home to follow.
That means that if we were thinking of spending in January (not convinced) then we can do so with the confidence of knowing there's a chunk of change in the bank from this competition. Lose / draw and I think that probably kills the chance of any January spending. We won't know our CL fate until a few days before the window closes and it will probably be too late to act then, unless we're planning to take players from teams that will have been knocked out by then.
I'm convinced this is a factor in City going after Guehi in January - they knew we wouldn't be able to match their bid until we know our CL fate.

Full strength here, full strength Bournemouth, rotate for Qarabeg.

This one I'd go same as Burnley except with a non-Gakpo

Alisson

Frim
Ibu
Virgil
Kerkez

Gravy
Jones
Szob

Chiesa or Rio
Wirtz
Ekitike

Unfortunately this post has given me hope that we'll make signings in January if we beat Marseille. Damn you @Beamrider

you really think it’ll be that bad? i predict a cowardly reserved performance as seems to be the norm now
Nah it won't be a drubbing, but I do expect a total defeat. Maybe 1 or 2 goals, but a very depressing performance from us as well

the depressing performance is very likely, it’s got the look of a no win scenario for arne. even a big win is of questionable merit when you look at the marseille squad.

This Is going to be a very tough match against a team that have scored a confidence inspiring 14 goals away from home in their last two games (yes, against very weak dubious, competition) and before that drew 2-2 with PSG in a cup final (losing on pens).

Their home form has been a little dodgy of late after starting off brilliantly (inc. a 5-2 win over PSG). Losing 0-2 at home to Nantes in their last home game. Beating Monaco 1-0 the game before that and drawing 2-2 at home to Toulouse before that.

---------------------------- Alisson

Gomez ---------- Ibu ---------------- VvD ---------- Kerkez

-------------------- Gravy------- Macca

---------------------------- Szob

Frim --------------------- Wirtz ------------ Ekitike

Win this and at home to Qarabag we should save ourselves 2 games. Worth it to go all out for the win.

We need 1 point to qualify and probably 4 from the next two games to qualify in the top 8. PSG showed last season that is doesnt matter where you finish anyway, but would be nice to play 2 games less.

Marseille away, De Zerbi team, scoring loads of goals and full of confidence. Yeah, Slot will set us up like Inter away.

Gomez won’t start. He is there for break in case of emergency or to take off Frimpong for the final 10 minutes. Robbo comes in for Kerkez. Mac also in, probably for Jones. Gakpo will keep his place.

I'm fine with Jones being benched. He annoyed me against Burnley and our defensive shape is easily lost when he is out of position.
