Liverpool are racing to complete the signing of England striker Jamie Vardy for £28m from Leicester City and could still take their spending inside a week to around £200m should Monaco sanction the last-minute sale of Thomas Lemar.
Vardy was undergoing a medical with Liverpool staff late on Thursday afternoon at St George’s Park, where he is preparing for England’s World Cup qualifiers. Despite having spurned a move to Arsenal just last summer the 30-year old was persuaded to leave having spoken on the phone to Jürgen Klopp on Wednesday evening and heard how the German intends to deploy him at the Anfield club, particularly in the Champions League. Vardy feels he can excel in Europe's elite club competition after the experience he gained last year during Leicester City's impressive European campaign. Vardy is also reported to have been persuaded by encouraging reports from England team mates about the atmosphere at Melwood and the club's ambitions.

Leicester City's initial reluctance to part with their star striker was eventually overcome by Liverpool's preparedness to include a loan deal with the fit-again Danny Ings going in the opposite direction. Ings is looking to bounce back from a second serious knee injury, which kept him out of action last season. He has recently featured for Liverpool's under-23 side, but was informed that he would face an uphill task to establish himself in the Liverpool first team.

The departures of Divock Origi and Danny Ings, coupled with Daniel Sturridge's notorious injury record makes it highly likely that Vardy will play a significant number of games for the reds as they compete on four fronts this year. Vardy is nonetheless aware that competition for place will be tight. That competition may intensify this season with Liverpool still refusing to concede defeat in their pursuit of France international Lemar. Liverpool have had several enquiries for the 21-year-old rejected by Monaco in recent days but will continue to pursue what would be another club record signing – in excess of £70m – until the last minute. The club’s medical staff are on standby to travel to Clairefontaine, where Lemar is preparing for France’s World Cup qualifier against Holland on Thursday, should Monaco relent and agree terms with Liverpool on the final day. Liverpool also remain interested in Virgil van Dijk and I just made all of that up.

Nice one!

Nice work, but next time you should bury the reveal somewhere in the middle, because the first thing I did was to scroll to the bottom to see if it says "I just made all of that up" – sure enough, it was there!
