I know it might be early to start the thread, but I'm going to anyway, because there's a whole stack of activity going on in Melbourne this week that may be of interest to some of you folk 😉

So we know Suarez & Coates have arrived, and the team are now here, with a reasonably decent sized crowd to meet them.

I hinted in an earlier post that there were certain "battle lines" being drawn in football in Australia. The Guardian ran an article questioning whether Man utd were now Australia's team, on the basis of more tickets were sold for their game in Sydney on Sat night than the last Socceroos game where they qualified for the World Cup. The Utd players were present at the Rugby League State of Origin game on Wednesday night, with Giggs being interviewed on the pitch at half time.

Lou Sticca, the promoter responsible for bringing Liverpool to Melbourne, commented earlier this evening at a function earlier this evening (more on that later) that he had to convince the Melbourne City Council that Liverpool were going to be as big a draw as Man Utd - the council had originally wanted the game to be played at Ethiad Stadium (60,000 capacity - where the recent lions test was played).

Sticca won his argument, and the game has now sold out at the MCG with a crowd of 95,000+ expected - making it one of the biggest sporting events of the year in sport-crazed Melbourne.

The battle line is drawn, in that Liverpool have never come to Australia before.... and Melbourne are now claiming them as "their team".

There are a whole range of things going on over the next few days that I'll try and update on.

So the function I was at - which I helped in a small way to set up - was an Anfield Wrap sideshow, featuring a Q&A session with Craig Johnston.

Let me start by saying, that Craig Johnston is a genuinely nice bloke, passionate about the club and football, but also, really, just a fan like one of us. Polite, friendly, attentive.... all the things you sometimes forget that footballers are.... well... probably were.

Anyway... he's a massive Suarez fan - thinks we should have a team of them on the pitch, then we'd win. Hated Torres and has some great stories to tell about the "old days' and how he developed as a kid.

For those of you of a certain age he told the story of how he created a club called the SGC (Sour Grapes Club) for disaffected players in the 80's who couldn't get a regular starting position in the team... and often ended up getting on the piss 🙂 Johnston was joined by Jan Molby, john Wark, Paul Walsh, amongst others. Rushie apparently always wanted to join the group, but was denied entry for obvious reasons.

He talked about Kenny Dalglish - how by just walking in to a room he could make a team better, because he was Kenny Dalglish. The downside of Dalglish, was that very few people had the bottle to challenge him - most players, etc being ass kissers - only the likes of Sounness would and this may have been part of his down fall in the second coming - although his dislike for and mistrust of the press which meant he dealt with them poorly was a major factor in his sacking.

John Barnes, was probably the best player he played with in terms of skill, a great guy, but maybe lacked a little bit in passion and desire from being so bloody good that he didn't have to try as hard. Beardsley was a great player... but a "greedy bastard". Grobbelar was on a different planet - Johnston shared a room with him I believe - which he said was "an experience".

He talked a lot about the current state of the game - stuff we all know - everyone from players, to agents, to managers, to owners, to media all on the cash gravy train. particularly scathing about coaching standards and young players in England - that the reason so many foreign players are coming in to the game are because they have better technical ability and more desire to succeed, while the English players just expect it to be handed to them.

He talked about the importance of technical intelligence combined with technical ability in the game - knowing how to cope with different team setups, as opposed to lining up the same way every week.

It's funny as well.... he talked about Dalglish, about how he always tried to operate at a higher level on the pitch, always trying to play the hard ball or Hollywood pass - but the joke was - it was Match of the Day 80's where all you would see on TV were the highlights - so all you'd see were the times it came off and not the 8 out of 10 times it didn't.

Made me think about Ross and his stats on Suarez and how many times he misses before he scores. 😉

All in all a really interesting night. Tomorrow night I get to host Fowler & Rush - so I'm pretty excited about that.

host them at your pub ? if hamann is still with them they'll probably drink you dry .

United had 21-22000 at their open training session in sydney but were charging $15 a pop . I think we're charging for our melbourne session also but i believe the money is going to charity , not sure if united's is .

did dreamy get up on ryan's shoulders to take that vid ?

Some tickets were handed out free - how many, I don't know, but a reasonable amount, before going on sale with proceeds going to charity.

Figure of at least 15,000 expected for training - that's a figure quoted by VIC Police a week ago - so it may have gone up.

Nice one @StevieM

People can take for granted in this country in being able to see games. It's great to see that our club can sellout on the other side of the world, pretty much based on its stature from the past rather than our recent successes.

I find it amusing that Chelsea are having to give away tickets to the same stadium we've sold out!

Craig's an incredibly nice bloke. Inspirational.

When he retired he dropped everything to care for his sister who has special needs. He did the same after Hillsborough and came halfway round the world to return to Liverpool and be on hand to help. Amazing guy.

Yes. When I talked to him he was preparing to do a photo shoot with Tiger Woods, design a new boot, work on a new TV format and writing a screenplay. He's an amazing force of nature.

Great stuff Stevie, looks like a great day.

Can't wait for a bit of chanting on Wednesday night to show the Aussies what a real atmosphere is like.

Stevie M ... can you PM your contact details?

I'll be down in Melbourne with a few boys Wednesday lunch time - keen to hit up ur bar if you'll be present.

I don't think I will ever forget the experience I had tonight.

95,000 people is amazing! But how does a team like LFC gain such a following considering we've been mediocre at best. Is it our cup success, which carries little favor here in the UK?
