West Ham on Saturday

From the offal's report:

The 4-1 win over West Ham meant the Reds have now struck four or more goals in four consecutive home games for the first time in 33 years.

Super. Could've been 5 too if we'd put another past Palace. We host Cardiff and Hull (oh yeah, it's payback time) in our next 2 home games. May the streak continue!

It's so refreshing to see a central defender who consistently gets his head on the ball. Even if he does have a silly haircut.

I thought he was pretty average. Some really awful execution and decision-making at times, along with a handful of bright moments. I remain unconvinced that he'll ever make the grade here, to be honest.

OK, so lessons learned:

I) Flanagan ain't good enough for right back and shouldn't be played on the left.
ii) Mignolet is fucking ace and without him we'd be royally fucked.
iii) Our best defensive partnership is a total fucking mystery.
iv) Unless we score first then we are royally fucked.
v) Suarez is a mad fucking genius.
vi) A midfield acquisition in January is a fucking must.

i) Bollocks. He's been a massive surprise for me, the lads outperformed any expectations I had of him. It baffles me how anyone can be that hard on him.

iv) It definitely helps when we score first, but I'm pretty sure we've come from behind this season, haven't we?

vi) I'm not so sure it's a must. I'd sure as hell like one, but with it being midfield they'll be expensive & we need to get the right one. We will still stand a good chance of getting cl without that, so dont be surprised if we don't prioritise that.

To expand on that, we desperately need width, the way we set up that means full backs, so I expect at least one to come in Jan, that would in turn lift pressure from the midfield.

Your other points I agree with.

I dont think its to harsh on Flanno, mainly cause he isnt good enough. You can get away with that against Norwich and West Ham, but not Spurs away. Its a recipe for disaster.

now i know MOTD are limited by time in terms of how many game highlights they can show but fuck me their choice selection is so poor . They start off showing some very average West Ham chances , perhaps to give the (false) impression west ham were on top and thus build suspense . From the first half they didn't even show one of the best moments when coutinho played sterling through and he narrowly missed .

And from the second they didn't show anything from the best period of the game, between our second and the skrtel o.g , bar gerrard's injury . They left out the beautiful build up and side pass from henderson when sterling should have scored . Or sterling's nice play where he knocked it over the defender then cushion headed it into suarez path . or his low left foot shot the keeper saved

Hmm i see a pattern against sterling ..i'm calling the Society of Black Lawyers .

Its his hair cut they don't like, and theres no law against discriminating against hair styles

I agree, I was watching it thinking that we were lucky to win. They made it look like it was a close game yet we should have had about 8 goals with Stirling getting 3 shite selection from MOTD.

what's the consensus on sterling? I thought he was ok yesterday, showed good enterprise and tracked back well. maybe being dropped early on was a wake-up call?

re: flanno - he's got promise as a RB but he is a liability at left back.

watching it again, yes nolan's red card tackle was dirty but cole was lucky not to get more than a yellow for his lunge. it probably had the potential to do more damage as he had his weight behind it .

Too harsh. mate. He's been better than I thought he would/could be. Remind sme of Arsenal fans who were collectively venting their spleen about Ramsey.

Reasonable observations. I think (iv) and vi) are related. If we go behind we are more likely to concede another than score ourselves. The central midfield is a major reason for our letting so many goals, either from conceding silly free kicks or waving a runner through without even a challenge. I think the less closer to our box Gerrard, the better we play both offensively and defensively.

Flanagan made some errors yesterday, but since he's come into the team for the last couple of matches, he's surprised me by how much he has matured. I think he's on the right track.
