What's 1 (it could be more than 1) football related controversial take you have?

Carra had more than a couple of things going for him. He had great awareness. He knew where and how to position himself. Which is huge for centre backs. Then he also knew how to read the game. Reading the game is part of awareness. Hew knew how to position himself because he knew how to read the game. What's remarkable about Carra was that he had a tremendous career as a centre back all the while he did not have great physical attributes. He had no speed. But was a great reader of the game with great awareness and positioning. And then leadership too. We didn't win that title w/ Rodgers because he retired one year too soon. He could've stayed w/ f. Stevie and played another 20-30 games. We actually needed cover at that position during that season.

Wow! I think full stop is Carra's mum 😂

Jaap Stam was widely overrated. He was very quick after the first ten yards and very powerful in the tackle but got done quite often over the first ten yards, he had a big leap on him but his headers went all over the place, and his distribution and dead ball kicks were hopeless.
I’d add Vidic to that.

I think Xabi Alonso gets too much adoration from our fanbase. I don’t necessarily mean on here, but from what I see elsewhere. He was only with us for three years. His debut season decent, but his second was average at best and downright poor at times. In his final year, he was world-class, but let’s be honest, he was playing out of his skin to impress Real Madrid and prove a point to Benítez. So this is a player who only gave us two genuinely good seasons, handed in a transfer request, forced a move, and then went around telling every fanbase he’s played for that they’re the best and most special supporters in the world.

Xabi is a suave, good-looking, brilliant footballer and an intelligent man, so I understand the admiration in a James Bond sort of way, but the level of praise and adulation, even with the CL win taken into account, far outweighs what he actually contributed to this club.

Houllier constantly talking to himself on the touchline always weirded me out. Its like I was looking at someone suffering with dementia.

He was with us 5 years.

When Rooney first appeared on the scene he was like a force of nature, especially for England at Euro 2004, but after joining the Mancs he soon turned into a nasty fucking thug of a player.

Football is boring because the same teams win all the time. It needs to make itself much more entertaining and balanced by somehow copying the best qualities of US sports such as luxury taxes/penalties, drafts that award the weakest teams the best young players, etc. trades instead of transfers. Etc.

So when we dominated English football in the 70s and 80s it was boring was it? The US system is just too Alien

I've said this before but penalty shootouts are an absolutely terrible way to decide football matches, and it's a disgrace to the sport that we've had so many European Cups and even World Cups settled by them.

They've got almost no connection to the sport itself, and what's worse, there's a large element of luck to them (this is undeniable - the goalkeepers actually guess which way to dive!). At the very least, let players take shots from far enough out that the keepers don't feel compelled to dive at random. At least that would be a true test of SOME kind of skill.

The draft works in America because the professional teams in the US don't produce their own players.
How is it supposed to work here in Europe?

"With their first pick, Liverpool FC have decided to draft Max Dowman from Arsenal FC"

I'd be ok with this, so long as we win all the time

The one contribution that Americans might contribute to the game is the 35-yard shootout. Far superior to penalties. It actually tests the skills of both keepers and those shooting. Unfortunately, I never see it happening.

I will take to the grave that VAR is being deliberately sabotaged by the officials working it, 'coz they don't want it. There's simply no other way to explain the endless failures and "ineptitude".

From a LFC player perspective, Owen and McMoneyman are VASTLY overrated (good, but never world class, regardless of that fucking golden boot and those moves to Madrid.

From a non-LFC player perspective, so was that horrible cnut Cantona. Always scored the 3rd in a 4 or 5-0 hammering, but very rarely got the 1 in a 1-0 and, yes, I DO remember a particularly painful exception to my claim). I think Essien was better than Claude MacHowever you spell it, and I think that the Chavs had several better CBs better than EBJT play alongside him in his career.

And I think that some of our fanbase can be terrible wankers to our greatest players while they're still here... Some of the shite I remember Digger getting at the end, the abuse Stevie often got, etc... I'm sure every team has their share, but sweet Jesus, we have some real fucking wallopers "supporting" this team.

Harry Kewell’s lack of effort and graft cost us the 2007 champions league final in Athens. He was always a lazy me-feiner

In the Ronaldo debate most professional players or pundits have Brazilian Ronaldo over Portuguese Ronaldo but when fans are asked about their top 5 players, Brazilian Ronaldo rarely appears where as Portuguese Ronaldo is a constant. I can't say I watched too much Brazilian Ronaldo on the account that he was in foreign league and the internet was very much in its infancy.
So where would you stand on the top 5 players in world football of all time and is R9 better than CR7?

The top 5 players is always skewed towards forwards and it’s hard to compare players from different eras.

I enjoyed watching Brazilian Ronaldo more but C.Ronaldo has the achievements, records and trophies to back his case.

OG is definitely the best pure #9 of all time for me. Shame injuries ruined him.

In terms of pure enjoyment though it will always be Ronaldinho… for a few years he was doing what everyone says needs to be coached out of you and winning. Loved the guy.

Ironically enough I think Pele is the most underrated of all the great players, partly because he's taken for granted and partly because it was so long ago now. But there's actually more than enough footage to form an impression and if you watch it it's immediately obvious why he was considered the best ever for so long.

He is another constant people's top 5 along with Maradona, C.Ronaldo, Messi and Zidane. Even kids know his reputation

People usually talk about Messi and sometimes tip a hat to Maradona. Pele is generally overlooked as the "GOAT" itself.

Dickhead Ronaldo shouldn't even be in the conversation, of course.
