Position that needs strengthening?

We've already signed Carvalho, Nunez and Ramsay
So attacking midfielder, striker and right back.

Neco, Minamino and Mane are obviously leaving. Possibly Ox as well.
What's going on with Ben Davis btw?

Can't be arsed posting the entire squad so I stole this image and took some liberties by removing certain players.

We need a box to box midfielder, has some pace etc. but he needs to have qualities where he can play that DM role when needed. This is a must for this season - no agreement to sign Jude next season is going to fix this gaping hole in our squad. I don't think any of our midfielders can be relied upon - and I am not counting Carvalho/Elliot as central midfielders - they are too young and not that physical yet. We need someone who is physically developed, and has strong athletic ability - no one slow and unable to tackle. Ideally of the Bissouma variety. If we don't get one this season and we start getting injuries in that area - then it's all down to Klopp, if anything we should have learnt from the end of this season, that if the priority of our midfield in our system is all about being a relentless pressing engine, then we need numbers of the variety of player that Fab, Henderson, Milner, Keita.

I think with Carvalho, Thiago, and Curtis we have enough attacking type midfielders to call upon. I expect Ox to leave, so he will need replacing - not like for like though. There will be injuries next season and setbacks for many of our players because of the world cup. We ain't winning shit this season if we don't get this player. I would also like to add that one of Mane's qualities was to drop deep and battle with the midfield - more so than any of our current attacking line - I don't expect that service from Nunez, but that trait will be missed and is another reason why we need the type of midfielder I am asking for.

Can't complain too much about the way we do our transfers. Are we making the same mistake with our midfield as we made with our defense after Lovren left a couple of seasons ago?

I agree that if our top midfield targets are not available this season, wait for next season. But next summer, we might need a big midfield as well as Salah replacement investment.

We do have three talented youngsters - Jones, Elliott, Carvalho. I am wondering if Klopp is thinking of giving them a season to see how they contribute to the first team and at what level before splurging more money.

I think the issue there is that none of those three are a Thiago/Hendo-like replacement or a box-to-box midfielder a la Bellingham. The more I see of Calvin Phillips the more I think he'd suit us perfectly, strong, energetic and creative plus he can score. Likely that ship has sailed and he'll cost a fortune with the English-tax. I know nothing of the new Nunes we've been linked to ... anyone like to enlighten us on what type of player he is?

Elliott is clearly going to be taking more of Hendo's game time this season if he keeps this up :

Harvey Elliott has given Liverpool fans an exciting reminder of what he's capable of in England U21's win, registering two assists and having a hand in four of the five goals scored. England beat Kosovo 5-0, with Elliott playing on the right-hand side of a midfield three.

On the right side of midfield is where Harvey started last season - I don’t think he’s been developed for the Salah role at all.

Fabs, Hendo, Thiago, Keita, Jones, Harvey, Ox, Milner & possibly Carvalho with Morton & Clarkson (make or break for him this season) in addition from the youth setup.

We’re not signing a midfielder.

I voted other, to capture the need to replace Klopp with Wagner and move into the opera business.

Here it is Fabs, Thiago, Naby and Hendo our main MF, unfortunately if 3 of those 4 are injured we're f'ed. And Fab is not there we struggle.
If Klopp really wants JB and thats next season we still need a DM/CM. If funds are short get Kessie, he is available for free, or get Camara or player of that ilk.
Unless Klopp thinks Morton can fulfil that role?

Drop Ox and include Carvalho and that's it. A lot depends on the younger players (primarily Elliott & Carvalho) developing fast ... because effectively 4 first team quality players isn't anywhere near enough for a full season challenging for 4 titles.

Hasn’t Maddock and Joyce said our business is done for this summer?

Think we’ve recruited well again, done what we need to do…would’ve liked to see 1 experience face walk through but we’ve got 3 very talented kids in.

Hendo has just turned 32, i think his ‘position’ is the priority - box to box midfielder. We also never replaced Gini’s legs either.

Hendo looked on his last legs last season. Wasn't the dominant man in midfield like he used to be. Thiago is made of glass and ox and keita are shit. We are in desperate need of midfielders. We were bad enough last season, but it will be even worse this year. We cannot rely on hendo and thiago to play a full season as that will never happen. Oh forgot about Jones who looks like he hasn't pushed on at all. Big season for him this year. Could make or break him.

Yea we could make an argument for adding several types of midfielder.

The stat about our squad starting the season with no midfielder between 21-27 years old is quite a shocker, the 27yo is Naby as well and i can’t say any of the younger lads looked great last season.

Well… I’d have to point out that we just did challenge for 4 trophies with that very midfield - and we’ve added Carvalho to it.

So, you can’t say it isn’t anywhere near enough to do the thing they’ve just done.

I would be happier with an additional player but it’s not the end of the world.

Klopp would have to rotate better - but there’s also the World Cup to factor in - we might find that a large chunk of our midfield plays very little or not at all - which could work for us.

The problem we have is that soon enough - if we are going to compete as we did last year - every game will be a crunch game and generally Klopp will play it safe with his selections if can afford to. I don't think he trusts the likes of Elliot and Jones just yet, although perhaps that will change a year on and with a good preseason.

There is very little room for slack in our team in general not just the midfield. But the midfield especially is a weak point and a long-term injury could potentially put us out of one or more competitions very quickly.

We did very well to keep our midfield fit for the most part last season but they're all one year older and off the back of a grueling 60 game season with another to come and a World Cup on top of it.

We're clearly happy to take a gamble when weighing up sticking with what we've got vs transfer market but let's drop the whole "oh it's fine, nothing to worry about" shtick and call a spade a spade - it's a big gamble.

Hopefully it pays off.

Hendo, Fabs & Thiago (I assume) are all going to be heavily involved in the WC. And all have a lot more miles in their legs and another year on the calendar after last season's workload. I think it's going to be too much to ask them to do it all over again. We need an Ox replacement who's capable of challenging for a starting spot.

Maybe - but Thiago & Henderson aren’t guaranteed starters and the England players will be having a few weeks off if recent games are anything to go by.

Look, I’d like to see a new midfielder brought in, but I can also see the logic that it’s not an absolute necessity.

Milner & Ox won’t be here next season and Henderson will definitely not have the legs for it - so we’re definitely needing 1 or 2 next season.

For me, we need a midfielder to plug the gap between the young and experienced midfielders, and offer an alternative if Keita and Thiago are out.

However if we're looking to move to a 4231 then it becomes less pressing due to Carvalho and Bobby taking the ten spot.

Difficult to call without knowing the set up. Pre season will be interesting.

Just seen that....I get the coaching thing, but the U23s must be utter shite to have him playing.
Not sure about that. I think having an experienced pro to guide through the games can only be good for them.

And I assume he's a decent professional off the pitch as well (or why else would we have signed him), so that will also help set an example for the the kids.
