Who makes room for Luis

Yep. That's more than fair enough. He was very, very good against Man United and Aston Villa too. Sure he's not the Gerrard of old, but he's still a very good player. He needs to fucking retire from the international game after the World Cup though.

I would say he had a great first half against Villa and Utd too, when we bossed the middle of the park. We didn't do so in the second half of either of those games.

Agree to disagree I suppose. I thought he made some good interventions and tackles in the second halves of those games, which given we were on the back foot was a big part of his job.

Moses wasn't brought to be on the bench.
He isn't quite fit enough to last 90 minutes though so is going to end up on the bench anyway, he might be more effective coming on in the 2nd half as opposed to starting the match.

Me too Mystic. Moses wasn't getting to start at Chelsea, and coming on as a sub wasn't really working out that well for him. Even against Swansea, he grew into the game. I hardily noticed him for the first 15 minutes. Then he started playing like a boss. He's a dangerman. I want him to start.

Yep, our two best chances, the Sturridge point blank header, and the ball across to Henderson which was blocked, both came from superb Moses work, as did a goal, he should definitely start.

Nah I think he'll continue to start until he's fit enough to last 90 which won't take to long.

I often think that if a player hasn't been out injured they should be able to play the full 90 mins even if they've been a sub for a year.

I mean, what do they be doing? Surely they're training every day?

Not if Sterling is as clueless as he was yesterday. Ibe deserves a chance.

You do know you'll be burnt at the stake for saying that? It's heresy on here.
I do not see the love-in for Sterling, he is a prospect and nothing more. He doesn't offer anything to a starting 11 and he hardly offers anything coming on as sub. He's a headless chicken, he can't cross, his final ball is no good, and his shooting is weak and inaccurate. He's got pace to burn and can on occasion beat a man. He might be good after another 3yrs in the reserves but he's nowhere near good enough for me at the moment.

And as you said, which I agree, I'd rather play Ibe off the bench on the prospect-front. He looks more direct and seems to create more of a threat in and about the box than Sterling. Or Luis Alberto, maybe give him a try.

There is a level of fitness and sharpness that can only be gained from comp matches unfortunately, especially at the highest level, where half a yard or a half a foot in a touch can be the difference to a superb run or pass or a slip on your ass as Aspas and Sahko proved.

I'm not convinced. They're all slacking.

The "established back four" changes all the time. It's a bit of a lame attempt to pick holes in my suggestion. These type of threads are all hypothetical anyway, so yeah I changed the formation to suit a more attacking team. What's your point? The team would be capable of function so ergo, square pegs/round holes my ring piece.

Not lame at all - we are not going to go to a back 3 - fucking simples !

We've played 3-4-2-1 before. I'm not saying we should play it week in, week out though. I posted hypothetically while Agger and Johnson are out (yes I should have alluded to this in my original post but whatchagonnado). You have to admit, it's a pretty tasty midfield/attack that would heap a lot of pressure against the "lesser" teams who park the bus at Anfield.

Drop Gerrard ? that's like telling hizbo to drop Hasan Nasrallah.

He's 33 years old and his body's been through the mill in terms of injuries.

As it stands now, I'd sooner have Lucas and Henderson in the side ahead of him.

All this bullshit about Gerrard. He had a crap game. He was a fucking beast against Man U.

Jesus fucking Christ.

Exactly.

And to be honest, he wasn't THAT bad. I actually thought he solid enough for most of the game. It was only a few isolated moments that he wasn't at his best.

Having said that, he does need to be rested now and again. He looked knackered last night.

Gerrard is boss at Anfield and should start every home game but it's the away days when we need discipline in midfield where he should maybe take a back seat now and again.

Henderson I can sort of understand, but Lucas? Are you for real?

I am, yes. Lucas carried Gerrard at times last night.

Yes it's one bad performance which can always be excused but lets be honest here, Gerrard played similarly in a shitload of games last season.
Nobody's saying we should hang arguably the Club's greatest player out to dry but at his age and with his injury record, is it a crime to suggest he should be left out?? Even for a few games?

It's no crime to discuss that prospect for any player, but mostly Lucas hasn't been even as good, let alone better - including last night, where I didn't think Gerrard was that bad.

Have I at any point said Lucas is the better player?

However, in terms of the defensive midfield role, Lucas all day long.

I'm well aware of what you've actually said (and you've just done it again), namely that Lucas performs better in the defensive role. I don't agree. Gerrard hasn't been great in that role, but even on a bad day he's no worse than Lucas, and on a good day he offers far more.

Not having that. Lucas' positioning, anticipation and timing of tackles is superior to Gerrard in that role.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

I don't know the tackling stats, so you may be right there, but the fouls Lucas commits weigh heavily against that and he offers naff all to get us going forward again.

We will indeed have to agree to differ.

If Coutinho is broken, Suarez will just slot in where he did. Some of our attackers are bound to break eventually, so there will be minutes available.

At home this is likely....

Suarez/Coutinho--------Suarez/Coutinho-----------Moses

-------------------------------Sturridge---------------------------

Away...

Henderson-------------Suarez-----------------Coutinho/Moses

-----------------------------Sturidge----------------------------------

But with Sturridge's injury record, we'll see a fair bit of Suarez in the striking role and Henderson on the right.
