I think it can be hard to judge a how good a player actually is in the moment, and and that there's about a 12 -18 month time lag between a player changing and his reputation changing.

I think one of the easiest ways to figure out how good one of your players is, is to ask if they were available who would be interested?

In times gone by we persisted with the notion that we could get by with player x, only to find when we we're finished with them nobody else wanted them. We saw value that didnt exist - the anti moneyball team.

I've said for a long time I felt Johnson was rubbish - he's available and there's not so much as a whisper about where he'll end up. Gerrard is so far gone at this stage he's heading for the USA etc

But more specifically I'm thinking of the following :

Allen
Lucas
Lallana

Leaving aside former managers and clubs (which are the go to answers) if all three were available what Premier league clubs would be interested?
Would anyone outside be interested?

Allen - Southampton.. If shneiderlin leaves he would probably worth considering for a club of Southamptons Stature..
Lallana - Everton.. He oozes potential.. he is cleary is a gifted footballer, but I dont think he has the stamina or fitness to take himself up a level.. Next season will be defining.. He needs to get in the gym and work on his fitness and bulk himself up during pre season

Lucas - Spurs or maybe Arsenal.. personally I would keep him ..

[EDITED: to fall in line with @Roscos rule

I could see Spurs taking a punt on Lallana, in fact most clubs outside of the top 4 would probably take him if offered.
Allen is bound to be more limited because he only suits a certain type of side, one thats going to play a possession based short passing game so I could see him at Southampton, or possibly Everton if Martinez stays
Lucas despite having some pretty vocal cheerleaders is a bit hard to call, a solid pro but hes 28 and has had a lot of bad injuries in the last couple of years. Hes a known quantity but hes too limited to play for some of the better sides in the league, West Ham, Stoke etc would gladly take him on. Basically none of them would get near a team in the top 4 places so that probably tells you all you need to know although Lallana probably has the most potential to improve, the other 2 have been here long enough that we know what they are capable of

I don't think you're asking a fair question here.

The situation completely changes once these types of players make their big move to a "top" club. Plus in England there is less movement between the top clubs so the only way is down at a loss or abroad.

British players rarely move abroad too.. I always find that bizarre.... But its been the case for years...

The fact of the matter is no top club in England will take them.

Lucas - Too injury prone and limited
Lallana - Any club aspiring to break into the top 7, he has talent, doesn't offend, can play but most of the time flatters to deceive and has one good season in his pocket.
Allen - See above

Lucas is wanted by some clubs in Italy.

As for Allen and Lallana, I think you'd find most clubs below us in the league table would be interested.
That tells you, imho, that their quality is for a club about 5th and downwards.
None of the top 4 clubs would be interested at this point, even though Utd wanted Lallana last summer.

The worry for the interested clubs would be the wages. From what we've seen in the past years is that most clubs in the league can spend 10 mill on one player.

I think the better question is what transfer fees they'd command.

Think Lallana is the only one we'd make a major loss on. I can see plenty of PL clubs wanting Allen (for about 10 million) and plenty of Serie A/La Liga clubs wanting Lucas (for 5 milion).

While we're at it, who in the wide world is going to give us anything of value for:

Balotelli
Aspas
Borini
Lambert
Alberto
Enrique
Coates

??

55 million spent on that lot. We'd be lucky if we recoup 20.

Balotelli 10-12 mill
Aspas 4 mill (confirmed by Joyce)
Borini 6-8 mill
Lambert 2-3 mill
Alberto 2 mill
Enrique 1 mill
Coates 500k

But isnt that before we pay contract settlements to them?

Okay, someone like Lambert may be willing to forego any element of his contract just to get to another club and actually play, but for all the rest (assuming they dont hand in a transfer request) we are likely going to have to be paying (as a minimum) the difference in salary between what they get with us and what they get elsewhere for the remainder of their current contract.

So Hull may give you 1m for Enrique, but he has a year left on his salary of 50k a week they only want to pay him 30k, so you end up having to give him that 1m to move - okay that doesn't seem to be a big deal in that particular transfer, but I guarantee you Sevilla aren't going to be paying Aspas anywhere near what we pay him, and as for "not-so-super" Mario....well you can probably take a minimum of 50% of that transfer fee and burn it.......you could genuinely be talking about not recouping any £££ from that list whatsoever to reinvest (and I think you're missing Illori for £7m, net 25p)

I actually think Rosco has a point here. Lallana would find a club I reckon, but definitely one of the clubs lower down. Maybe Swansea or something. Allen someone in the Prem might want him, but again, same deal here as Lallana. Lucas would end up at Bologna or someone a bit poo in Italy.

Yeah, there is obviously that. The big question will be which clubs end up agreeing a fee or are interested.
I dont see a problem with Borini, Aspas (25-40k going by reports), Lucas, Lambert, Alberto and possibly Coates.
Enriques 50k and Balotellis 100k a week are obviously going to hit us.

I think we should keep the lot of em,our squad is piss weak as it is and that's where they belong! We need to buy 1st team players now and they will be sufficient back up!
