Would you take this squad then?

Trimmed and strengthened in all the right places:

GK - Reina, Doni

DR - Johnson, Kelly, Flanagan

DL - Enrique/Clichy, Aurelio, Robinson

DC - Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Cahill/Dann

DM - Lucas, Spearing

CM/AM - Gerrard, Meireles, Adam

RM/RW - Henderson, Kuyt

LM/LW - Mata, Downing (assuming Mata is versatile enough to play a deep or 3rd striker role too)

ST - Suarez, Carroll, Wickham

I appreciate there's a long way to go yet in the window and not every link is everyone's cup of tea (done to death), but would you take that, assuming we get Mata or if not, a player of similar ilk?

And do you think that's a vast enough improvement and perhaps enough to get back in the CL?

Outgoings:

N'Gog
Poulsen
Jovanovic
Cole
Konchesky
Soto
Shelvey (loan)
Wilson (loan)

Re: Re: Would you take this squad then?

Lols

Even without mata id accept it and hope we'd add in january

Hopefully we do have 1 marquee still. Carzola would do

Ideally we'd be stronger in CM, but if we signed Mata I could live with it. If we don't sign Mata it's a fucking woeful summer of splashing £80m+ on shite/mediocrity.

I think I would take that team if it really was Cahill instead of Dann. No offense to Dann's ability but his injury record speaks Agger mk2.

We need to be realistic and perhaps see that the lure Champions League football is bigger than we think and that currently, it is hard for more established players outside the club to be attracted. We're still in the early stages of a project.

Honestly, it seems fairly bland, but I'm no genius. I'd want a bit more flair in some full backs, or wingers. Maybe another creator in the middle.

Kenny is on a pedestal with me... but I still can't give anyone a blank check. I guess no manager gets all signings 100% right.

Personally, I'm not excited - yet. I expected us to buy better. But with NO CL football on offer, I get it.

I would really like at least one Suarez standard signing in this window.
If that turns out to be Mata then that's fine by me.
If all the other acquisitions are just a step up or two from what's gone before, then I could live with that.

I can appreciate it's difficult with no CL. It doesn't mean that we should be paying high end prices for middle of the road plodders. Adam, Henderson, Dann, Enrique, Downing - That's £60m+ that is seemingly being spent for the sake of it. It's barely worth half that amount. And I still have reservations about Carroll.

Just because we mightn't be able to attract a £20m player doesn't mean we should spend £20m on a £10m player.

I guess the new owners and Kenny and Damien are being cautious about what's gone on before - throwing money at foreigners who might not settle, might want to leave in a season or two or just might not be suited to the Premiership.

Without European football I'd wager the club thinks there's an outside chance of really going for it in the league, which would explain why they're targeting Premiership proven players, creating a solid base and squad to work from, to then add players of the calibre of Mata and with Champions League football on the table too, hopefully as soon as possible.

I'm not saying we shouldn't just go all out anyway for players of that quality, but you could maybe see the logic from that point of view, setting out a solid base of EPL proven players who aren't likely to fuck off after a season.

I'd defiantly take that. Good progress from last season, and, in reality, what more can we expect.. It's not as if every player is available at a fair price with no one else going for them. It's going to take time to build the squad we need to challenge, and as someone already said we'll strengthen again in January.

I suppose the level of improvement would largely depend on the likes of Downing, Adam and Enrique proving they weren't having one off seasons and that they can 'do it' in a side with greater ambitions. How Henderson will fit into the picture and whether Carroll will start delivering are also interesting questions.

There seem to be a lot of question marks for the kind of outlay we're talking about here, but that might just be because I don't know the players in question well enough (which I don't).

I'm remaining hopeful that the transfer window will have one or two nice surprises in store for us.

I'd definitely accept that squad. IMO we'd have one of the best and well balanced starting XI in the premiership.
Considering that we're not playing in Europe next season, we could basically start with the same team in every premiership game.

Yeah I can understand that, Mark. It's just the figures I have a problem with really. I wouldn't mind it if we were signing these players for their true value, but we're not. We're seemingly valuing them as some of the best in Europe in their position, which they're not.

The squad would be better for them should we sign them, but £60/£70m better? No chance. And I'd be cautious about our chances of getting into the top 4 again with that group of players.

Ok the summer market hasn't really got going yet but I really hope we can ship a fair few players out . We've some almighty shite in our squad that i hope to never see again .... the worry though is that there hasn't been much talk of any of them fucking off . I fear Jovanovic or poulsen aren't going anytime soon and well we've only ourselves to blame for the fat contracts we gave them .

If our signings don't seem like the greatest in Europe it doesn't matter too much as long as they are effective in the league. We have to be realistic. Our aim has to be to try to win the league of course but with a minimum requirement of a CL place.

If we achieve that then anyone who we don't want long term should keep their value anyway as they would have had a successful season behind them.

I guess it depends if we can land Mata and Cahill instead of Dann and Downing for me.

For various reasons i'd be quite happy to see Henderson Enrique and Adams with us for next season, however signing the likes of Downing, Dann and Wickham (to a much lesser extent) fill me with dread.

I appreciate we won't be able to sign the Aguero's of this world, but i'm not having for one second that for £40mil we can't do better.

Maybe i'm a loon, but i honestly think we'll be signing at least a couple of players who we've not really been linked with yet (much in the same way we signed Henderson).

I wouldn't be happy.

For me there is still a great big fuck off Mascherano and Alonso sized hole in that midfield. My hope was that we could sell Aquilani and Poulsen and replace them with someone of real quality. Henderson and Adam don't really fulfill this criteria despite offering us more options and depth.

Im happy enough with the left side. I think Downing/Enrique will actually give us some shape and width for once. They'll link up well together.

Im happy enough with Wickham coming in as 4th choice striker while he continues to develop.

I don't really see the point in signing Dann. We should get by with selling Kyrgiakos and still have enough options in there to cope without the extra european games. A centre back can wait until next summer for me when we've had a further 12 months to find the right man.

I still want a real pacy forward/winger option who can stretch teams and give us another type of threat.

with regards to CM ideally I'd want spearing loaned out and another more experienced holding midfielder brought in to usurp lucas.

I don't know about centre back, have we really got enough options after selling Soto, Whitey?

Skrtel and Carra are likely to be fit, though are not without their flaws atm, Agger is always injured, Wilson has looked out of his depth (and is reportedly going on loan), while Kelly, for all everyone's assertions that's he's an eventual centre back, is untried there at this level.

We need a commanding presence at the back. Like you I'm unsure whether Dann fits the criteria but we need 'someone'.

I'd hope so. We'll have Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Wilson, Kelly and if required Wisdom who wouldn't let anyone down. We could even keep Ayala if need be.

If we do cash in on Agger like rumours suggest we will then i would bring in another.

If we get hit by some freakish injury list despite having less games then we can try and bring someone in January.

I'd be happy with our CBs if agger remained injury free. with carra and skrtel that would be enough but agger is always injuired. difficult to plan who you need and that's why I now want agger fucked off. it would be 'so' typical if we got another centre back and agger for ONCE was injury free so he could run off his mouth complaining why he isn't getting picked.

I'd take it if it was guaranteed too, though I still feel in the longrun we need a big commanding presence who excels in the air.

Yup i like that.
Or Carroll and Suarez up top with Henderson and Mata wide in a 4-4-2

Anyone willing to see our team without Lucas? Any chance we might get an offer? Why is it so certain he's staying? (apologies, old ground).

[/quote] I'm just not convinced we will win anything with Lucas, Enrique, and kuyt right wing. Just don't think any of them are good enough. Dirk is alright as competition up front. I don't rate Henderson at all, not to piss on anyone's parade.
