Xabi Alonso homecoming??

I don't get the hype over alonso at all. He seems a decent manager but nothing special.

I think it’s more that there is an expectation at Real in terms of playing style and tactics, and I’m not sure if that blueprint matches his preferred set up.
He showed at Leverkusen that he is an excellent young manager.
Shouldn’t have moved to Real, but that’s easy to say when you’re not the one offered the most prestigious job in Football.

Iraloa is a good manager but the tonkings and periods of poor results his teams suffer arent the level we require.

He did an amazing job at Leverkusen and I reckon he'll recover from the current situation, whether at Real or elsewhere.

That said, my pick if we change now would be Glasner: done really well with Palace, knows the league and might bring Guehi too.

Surely no one expected him to go to Real and play 3-2-5, he would had explicit expectations he would fit into their system.

Don't think Xabi comes to us, ever. He seems like the sort that'll be determined to succeed at Real or leave on his own terms, and will.

The stars just won't align I fear

That formation would work well with a lot of our team - we would just need the CBs, although both Gomez & Robbo would actually likely be ok as one of 3 CBs.

I think it would give a really nice way to rotate the CMs as you'd likely play Gravy, Macca, Jones for solidity. Szobo would be excellent but the team needs his pressing further up.

In attack it looks lot like the attacking side of a 442 diamond would look.

-------Konate--Virgil--Robbo----
----------Gravy-----Macca-----
Frimpong---Szob/Wirtz---Kerkez
-----------Ekitike----Isak----------

The three at the back element works if our full backs are working in tandem, one goes forward, the other remains back. Solid 4 at the back out of possession flexing into three in possession.

Can’t help but feel that it’s one of those line ups that look good on paper but would struggle on field.

I think that is fair for our current personnel. If we had three actual CBs I think it could help level up our set pieces (forwards and back). It also relies IMO on one of the CM/DMs being a Fabinho type who will relentlessly cover the gaps for the attacking full backs. Gravy & Macca aren't that.

The rest can work IMO but relies on the full backs also having good ball control & retention when they slot in to make the midfield congested.

what’s the wisdom behind 3 at the back in possession? i find it hard to reconcile against peak klopp times when we played low block teams with virgil and matip basically standing on the halfway line.

Because Konate is fucking shit and can’t be trusted.

i really really hope we haven’t missed out on him

I doubt it given he was pictured in a Liverpool shirt doing his interview and had the pen in his hand. I'd be very surprised if both parties just agreed that it will happen regardless. January or next summer. He had made his choice.

i hope you’re right but football is littered with ‘i almost signed for’ stories
