Wembley is definitely a part of the problem I had with the Capello era. It's just awful. Is there an uglier large modern stadium? It seems to stand as a perfect symbol of everything bad about the FA and the football establishment. Give it to some NFL franchise and be done with it - there could hardly be a more fitting tenant.

As for Englishmen hating Englishness and patriotism - that does seem to be in a certain English tradition. I think it was George Orwell who wrote about the peculiar anti-englishness among a part of the British left. I suppose it's a good thing in many ways.

The left in 'Murica is the same.

Like cos the right are in control it its that kind of jealousy where you pretend you're just not interested?

I don't have a particular anti-englishness, certainly not a blanket one, I pick and choose the bits I like - the bits I don't make me a hypocrite for the most part, given that the empire and all that guff delivered this era of decadence that I seem to enjoy. I reckon with a culture and history as vast and conflicted as ours you can't love or hate all of it. I feel dead lucky to have grown up in a country that spawns so much great creative work, it's everywhere. I'd include footy in that. We do it very well here. It's all the other shite I put in the other post that I can't stand. I don't know if it's getting worse or I'm just noticing it more, but the pandering to idiot centre ground on every level pisses me off no end.

To me any Liverpool fan who supports England is showing a lack of knowledge and understanding of what we represent. We were started by Scots, we're Scouse not English, the FA is vile, the Ing-ur-lund set up, fans and media circus surrounding it are vile. It has nothing to do with us. Absolutely nothing. Graham Kelly, the treatment of John Barnes, international breaks, meaningless friendly so the spineless, incompetent corrupt FA can pay for their ridiculous corporate bowl, Beckham, John Terry, Shrek, Hodgson, St George flags with Banbury written on them, that fucking band, braindead muppets singing the national anthem as they watch their team of brave boys play in Estonia, the constant pisstake over the fitness of our players – there is not one single positive thing to recommend any Liverpool supporter to root for them for one solitary second.

nor has baseball got anything to do with Liverpool but you like that.

As an Englishman, sure i'd LOVE it if i could see England play well and win a game or two yeah... in my lifetime i have seen the odd exciting tournament from them and yeah I enjoyed them and was gutted when we inevitable got turfed out...

It also doesn't help that international football is so crooked and run by some truly despicable wankers...

Moreover it's undoubtedly true that we are shite and have a fucking clueless, classless, manager with a massive chip on his oh so entitled shoulder and a depressingly healthy cunt fan count... so... i'm pretty much M'eh about them tbh.

I fucking hate Nigel Farage while we are at it.

And Cameron

And that labour foetus fuck...

But back onto the question...

I don't watch England anymore if that's any indication.

And Rooney is a cocksmoker.

And even though he's retired from internationals John Terry can eat a steamy dog shit... scum...
yeah... that's what I think about all that shite.

I'm not really that fussed about England. When I was a kid I used to watch England matches, partly I think because in those days there weren't many live matches on the TV anyway, so you just got what you could!

As the years went on I lost pretty much all interest, and now I will watch England games in major tournaments, but even if I miss them it's not the end of the World.

I think the problem is that I hate most of the players, I hate most of the fans and I can't remember the last time I was particularly bothered either way about the manager. It doesn't endear you to a team really.

I remember a good few years ago watching Liverpool in a pub and some cunt of a Chelsea fan was moaning on about how we shouldn't be playing Gerrard because he needed to be fit for England. I pointed out to him that Liverpool pay his wages and that England are secondary. He accused me of 'not being a proper England fan' which he considered to be a really terrible insult, and looked really pleased with himself after he said it. If that's the mentality I don't think I will ever really fit in amongst England fans!

Morgan that plays cricket but is from Dublin. Is it Owen?

So Englands best Boxer wasn't English.

Englands best cyclist wasn't born in England.

Englands best athlete wasn't born in England.

Englands best cricketer (you guessed it) wasn't born in England.

One of Englands best footballers wasn't born in England, and their future greatest player wasn't born in England.

You hate the fans (reasonably enough) but you're not bothered about that appalling old goat Hodgson?

Aaaah but they all chose to be English.

No better endorsement of a countries greatness.

Used to support England, but as my interest in football increased, my disdain for a majority of the England squad increased, as well as its fan Base.

I'm glad I started this thread. A lot of soul-searching and some thoughtful posts; Woland's one is a gem. And the poll results are amazing, I definitely didn't expect that the "No" vote (for whatever reason) would be almost 70% here... On the plus side for England, there were 2 foreigners who revealed themselves as English fans (Hansern and redhorizon2, I hope you don't mind me publishing your names). Maybe, with a different manager, not all hope is lost.

Well, when he was mismanaging Liverpool I couldn't stand the sight of him. Now he is managing England I don't especially like him but ultimately it's a team I don't care THAT much about so I don't have such a strong dislike of him.

Re the 'No' vote: you realise a LOT of people on here aren't English, right? And a large amount of them are Irish, whose patriotism basically makes any kind of pro-English sentiment impossible?

You have to ask people who at least have a theoretical possibility of being England fans to get any kind of measure of patriotic support.

Yep, it's only really about 60% of English people that don't support England. Most of whom would swing to the other side if Hodgson went.

Roy Hodgson is a truly amazing man, he kills interest in football teams like no other. I wouldn't change the channel even when I know Raheem, Sturridge and Henderson are playing

Unless you are trolling I am disappointed by your sweeping generalisations

I think I'll suffer the consequences. Irish people don't want the England football team to do well. Whether or not you could find me 2 or 3 people in a thousand who do isn't really going to perturb me.

Now I know you are trolling
