Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the club could be playing in the Champions League next year with a top-four finish not out of reach.
After struggling early in the season, victory over Wigan left the Reds four points behind usual qualifiers Arsenal.
"We look as if we have not made a good start," the 34-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek.
"But with winning on Saturday, we are not too far behind the top four. It is still up for grabs."
Surprise package West Brom, a team Liverpool lost 3-0 to on the opening day, currently sit in the final qualifying spot for Europe's top club competition, with 23 points - eight points ahead of the Merseyside club.

However 11th-placed Liverpool are now unbeaten in seven matches and Tottenham, who finished fourth last season, are now just two points ahead of them in the table after losing 5-2 to Arsenal this weekend.
Such results have given Carragher hope that Liverpool could make it to the Champions League for the first time since 2009-10.
"Beside the top two, and even Manchester United lost on Saturday, a lot of teams are dropping points all over the place," Carragher said.
"From our own point of view, we now want to kick on and make a challenge for that top four place because it seems that everyone is throwing it away."
Last season Liverpool finished 17 points behind Spurs and manager Kenny Dalglish was replaced by Rodgers in the summer.
The Northern Irishman's time at Anfield has been marked by his decision to select academy products such as Raheem Sterling, Suso and Andre Wisdom in place of his predecessor's expensive buys such as Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll.
While Liverpool only took three points from their first five league fixtures, the turnaround in results since has seen them climb the table and led to Carragher praising his manager's approach.
"The owners have come in and looked at it and thought they want to bring in a new manager who will promote players from the academy, which he has done.
"I think it does take time to settle in. It was difficult to replace players like Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt due to the financial situation in terms of us spending a lot of money in the last few years.
"[Rodgers] has been very brave putting young players in and giving them a chance. Hopefully, we'll see the benefit of that in the future," the centre-back said.

We're 5 points off 5th.

It's not that ridiculous.

8th points and 7 spots. That's alot considering we only have 15pts so far. I can't see all those teams f*cking up that badly and in turn us reversing that size of a gap.

i still think it's a long shot but as mentioned before , our next 9 games are on paper easier than our start up to the wigan game . At the end of them we should know if we have any hope at all .

At the very least it's more positive talk than we have heard from anyone within the club so far this season . It does not harm to suggest we have higher targets , rather than just hide behind the "oh we're a new team , new manager , no strikers , young players " for the whole seaon .

And the abuse victim returns to the abuser, renewed with hope that this time it will be different.

The next step is to post a "how many points will we get from the next 10 games thread"

Then the next step is to bump that thread angrily about 3 games in.

You know how it goes from there.

Yeah but it's what we do.

Yes, it definitely is. I'd love to know what we are doing in January, before leaping fully on board though.

Time for a 'Who would you like us to buy not who do you think we'll buy' thread methinks. The bedrock of any good forum.

You make it sound like the above is a bad thing

Its not that far out of reach and we still have to play the teams above us. I wouldn't risk money on it at present but its still achievable.

8 points from 4th does give us a outside chance as long as we get another striker of quality in january. If we don't then we're fucked. But the teams above us haven't been playing that great either and all keep dropping points. has any of the team between 4th and us even won 3 games on the bounce? Looks like only west brom have and i can't see them sustaining this form for the whole season.

It all depends on how the next few games go for me. We're coming into a period of games where we should pick up points but, given these are teams we traditionally underperform against, I'm not holding my breath.

Swansea
Spurs
Southampton
West Ham
Villa
Fulham
Stoke
QPR
Sunderland

Points to be picked up there !!

We're also only six points away from the relegation zone. It's all nonsense at this stage.
Not denying that. But the fact is we are actually still in with a chance of champions league. Its not beyond all possibilities at this stage. We'll know i'll TRUE standing by january. The top teams will start hitting form by then. We need to be one of those teams to stand a chance.

We had a terrible start but I heard someone say this is our best form (last seven) since we came 2nd in 2009. Might be bull, but 7 unbeaten in the league is pretty good stuff and it's to do with playing all the tough games so early in the season.

Maybe this style suits beating the crap teams on a consistent basis, maybe the team hadn't gelled for the first few games against the big sides... But we've already played the whole top 6 so it would seem that we'll improve points wise.

Big game on Sunday innit.

Sunday is a huge game, if we can smash Spurs, that'll say a lot. We all knew this system would take time, maybe we're starting to see some progress at last?

We're playing Thursday - Sunday - Wednesday. Spurs is after a difficult trip to Swansea away. 2 pts out of 6 there for me.

Yeah, we do need to pick up a win against Young Boys so we may be forced to field some first team players to ensure it.
With the thinness of the squad I'd say you're about right there. Maybe 3 points but I wouldn't say more than that.

If we play a weakened team on Thursday with Downing, Cole, Morgan and the like coming in the form players will have had a good 8 days rest coming into the Spurs game. Hard to know what we'll come up against as Villas-Boas seems to have Spurs playing like their old school inconsistent best. Could be great, could be a doddle.

Fuck Young Boys!

Focus on the league.

I would agree but Rodgers has played pretty strong teams in the competition so its more likely he will continue to do that.

its at WHL. its never a doddle there.

Huge test as both teams are very strong at home. If we win both of them then 4th is DEFINITELY on. Hopefully lucas will make the bench on Thursday maybe???

Yes I imagine many Liverpool forums will set off alarm bells with the internetz police this week with comments like that.
