What a game it's going to be, a humongous game in our season. After the shamballs that was the Spurs game, we need a game against good opposition to prove our worth. Spurs are getting good far too soon for my liking, having played Arsenal, United, City and us and being only a point behind us with a game in hand they are in a fantastic position. We need to make a statement to ourselves that we are a top quality side, to get some belief back into the team, as lets be fair, we've been uninspiring yet effective so far this season.

Personally, I don't know how we can win this game on the performances of late, however I know we need to. Maybe the fact it's United might motivate the team like it has in the past, we need a thunderous performance to stand a chance. If we can match up to them though, there defence is there for the taking, Norwich pissed all over them at Old Trafford, it was a crime they got nothing from that game, Suarez, Downing, Carroll, Bellamy, Gerrard could cause them hell.

This brings me on nicely to what's shaping up to be the perfect time for a return to the starting line up for Gerrard. He's got quite a few minutes under his belt now and will have a nice two week rest (thanks Fabio), he just has to start, and for me, in the middle. I'm hoping after many months of him being out, with pretenders like Nasri and Modric trying to take the mantle of best attacking midfielder in the premier league away from him and it being against United, the stage is set for a big Gerrard performance. We need one, we're overdue one.

So the team for me has to be

--------------------------Reina--------------------------
--Kelly-----Carragher-------Skirt---------Enrique--
-Bellamy-----Gerrard-------Lucas-------Downing-
-----------------Carroll-------Suarez------------------

A couple of hard choices in here, first being the exclusion of Dirk, he's a player that doesn't look good on paper but he's never a player you want to leave out. It's a hard situation as I think it's about time Bellamy got his chance, his fight, pace and direct play, he'll be a big threat, and I imagine he'll be very much up for this game. So maybe Downing should go, probably a justifiable argument, however I just prefer him in the team to Dirk at the moment, but to be fair, any two of those three and I'll be happy. As for Carroll, he just has to play after his goal, especially as there is something slowly forming between him and Suarez. I'd like to see a big performance from him.

Gerrard has to go in the middle for me, we can't afford a midfield of Adam and Lucas against United. Lucas wins out over Adam for me as his partner, I just think Lucas will be a better partner.

It's going to be a very hard game on Saturday week, I'm not very confident but we just have to win, we can't keep up with the attitude that we're only dropping points for our hard games (Stoke away, Tottenham away) so it's okay. The buck has to stop here and we have to start performing. I want to be in the champions league next season, it's where we belong.

As I said in another thread today, beat Man Utd and we've got serious momentum going into the 3 games after (Norwich/West Brom/Swansea).

We could be right in the mix after that lot.

I don't think anyone thinks dropping points is OK but the Spurs abomination aside, we were unlucky against Stoke. We really should have won it. I fully expect us to compete against the Mancs. I expect us to win at home against them.

I wish the fixture was next week as they've been looking a bit jittery of late, but with the internationals happening, Fergie will have them re-grouped. I think it'll be a high scoring game.

I completely agree, I think it'll be 3-2, I reckon Young will score, as will Carroll and Suarez. However I think they'll be the ones winning =(

Oh that's not what I meant, no one (in there right mind) thinks dropping points is okay, however lots of people seem to reason that it's not so bad due to who we've faced. The stoke game was a crime, but so was Sunderland. This seems to be happening far too much, a win against United might just get the fire in our bellies and the belief that we'll start twatting teams left right and centre, like Buddha said, we could go on a romp in the next three games if that confidence/belief is in us. This is a huge game.

For the first time ever I'm glad there's an international break.

They look great and we look a bit rusty. A couple of weeks could help us and fuck them up.

I'm always confident against these at our place anyways.

Yup, I'm also glad for the break, and delighted that neither Kelly or Gerrard have been included in the England squad.

For me the team that started against Everton except switch Adam for Gerrard has to be the starting line up.

They were bang average at Stoke, utter shite against Basle and poor against Norwich so i don't know where you're getting that from.

I think they'll win.

I don't think we've got enough 'fighters' to make up for their superior level of talent.

Probably from a cursory glance of the Premier League table of which they sit top of.

Yeah, it's not like Newcastle are 4th and Arsenal 15th. We should all get carried away with league positions 7 games into the season.

Not denying United aren't a top side, of course they are and they could batter us if we're not on our game.
However i take issue when someone says they look great when in their last 3 games they've looked anything but. Suspect in defence and lacking a dominant player in the middle of midfield.

Just about to mention the same thing.

I'm not really sure what to expect out of this game. We need to raise our game quite considerably as I reckon we'll get beat if we play like we have been in the last couple games.

We need to get Gerrard and Bellamy in the starting line up, that's what we NEED to do.

You are indeed correct. If the last 20 years has taught us anything it's that seeing United sitting atop of the premier league is no predictor of their current ability or future success.

Eh? I'm not writing them off or downplaying their achievements over the years, I'm envious as fuck like every Liverpool fan.

The point i'm making is that they're not without weaknesses and they certainly haven't looked 'great' based on their last 3 games.

It's possible to want success for your team without having a feeling of envy for another that you actually detest.

Well, at least it is for me....

Wouldn't we need more talent?

True enough mate, but i'm just envious of them winning so many League Title's and us winning zero. It fucking sucks but what can you do.

Of course we are jealous of their success. We fucking hate them and they've won loads of trophies recently. I don't see the problem saying that. We don't envy them in a 'we aspire to be them' kinda way, fuck that. We envy their trophy haul and we want some of our own.

If you compare the two teams man for man, I'm not convinced they have a "superior level of talent" anyway. What they do have, and what we still need to develop, is the winning habit.
