L'Equipe: Monaco eyes Agger

Liverpool will oppose any attempt by Monaco to prise away central defender Daniel Agger, ESPN understands.

L’Equipe suggests that Claudio Ranieri’s side, bankrolled by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, want to sign up Agger, 28, and Manchester United winger Nani.
However, ESPN has been told Liverpool have not had an approach from Monaco, and want to keep Agger, who was targeted by Manchester City last summer before signing a four-year deal to stay at Anfield.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen in central defence following the retirement of Jamie Carragher, and has already brought in Kolo Toure on a free transfer from Manchester City, with Schalke’s Greece international Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Sporting’s Tiago Ilori also on his list of targets.

There are doubts over the long-term Liverpool futures of fellow central defenders Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates, but Rodgers has given every indication that he wants to retain Agger.

Monaco have already spent more than £100 million on players since reclaiming a place in France’s top flight by winning the Ligue 2 title in May. Ranieri has brought in striker Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid, midfielders Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez from Porto and centre-back Ricardo Carvalho from Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have confirmed they will face Celtic in a friendly at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on August 10.

It is the sixth pre-season game to be organised for Rodgers’ side, who face a three-match tour of the Far East in July.

They will face an Indonesia XI in Jakarta on July 20, then take on Australian A-League outfit Melbourne Victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground four days later, before playing Thailand in Bangkok on July 28.

Liverpool will then host Olympiakos at Anfield for Steven Gerrard’s testimonial on August 3, before travelling to Oslo to face Norwegian side Valerenga four days later.

Hopefully this is a case of us playing hardball, not us being stupid.

£60m for Suarez
£25m for Agger
£15m for Carroll
£15m combined for Coates, Assaidi, Spearing, Pacheco & N'Goo
£10m for Reina
£10m for Lucas
£10m for Skrtel
£5m for Downing
£20m transfer budget

That's £175m.

That's 8 x £20m players - a keeper, 2 Centre Backs, a Midfielder, 2 forwards & 2 strikers.

That right there, if you get it right, is how you jump from 7th to title challenging in 1 year.

It's a lot of players to loose - and Rodgers will earn his keep getting that lot to gel in one pre-season - but fuck it - can we do worse?

Would be nice.

In reality though - We'll get 40M for Suarez, 15M for Carroll, and about 2-3M for some of the younger shite.

A solid window here could vault us back into the champions league spots, which is very attainable considering the amount of movement taking place for the competition. Those are some weighty expectations though.

This only works in football manager. You can't possibly replace your almost entire team and challenge for 1st place next season.

It would be 1/2 the team.... But I agree that it's unlikely to happen and practically unworkable.
