Lucas Leiva - Wonderman.

Yaya bossed us this game, we needed Lucas to put him back in his place.
We had more possession last night. We controlled most of the game anyway.

Quite, but when City got the ball a lot of the time Yaya just walked through us without trying, Lucas had him in his pocket last time, not this time though. Bossed was a bit of an exageration though.

in dangerous areas? or did city give us the ball knowing we wouldn't do anything with it?
Ross seriously. You saw Lucas against City. Its not about the stats. The stats are a guide. You have to actually watch the games too.
Spearing and Lucas may have similar stats for the City games but if you are suggesting that they performed to the same standard....

Well. Youre better than that.

He wouldn't have made Pepe Reina save that shot, he wouldn't have made Glen Johnson mark Yaya Toure properly.

He wouldn't have provided anything Spearing didn't.

My opinion of Wonderman has changed after some of his recent top performances, but can anyone honestly say that they've watched our games and thought 'Lucas would make a difference if he was playing'?

Personally i haven't noticed our defence looking more vulnerable and going forward we look exactly the same since he's been out injured.
Yet we've conceeded more, scored fewer and lost more.
:)

Dont you start losing faith now. Me and you against the world kid.
Jay Spearing last night - Successful passes - 50/54 - 93%, tackling success - 100%.

If Lucas had done that you and a few others would be creaming themselves. The truth is any ordinary player can become a DM if you limit the role enough like we have done.
I do agree with that and I thought Jay played fairly well last night, but it's without doubt that Lucas is the better player; he uses the ball better and last time he completely outfought that City midfield.

The lack of Lucas didn't cost us much last night though. It was all individual mistakes and a lack of scoring ability on the pitch.

Do we really need a DM?

13 games played since Lucas injury -

- We have won 6, Drawn 4 and lost 3. We have qualified to the F.A cup quarter final and Carling Cup Final.
- We have scored 18 and conceded 13.
- We have also played a chunk of these without Suarez and our only other designated defensive midfielder in Spearing. We also had Gerrard back for the later half of these games.

Last 13 games before Lucas injury (including the Carling cup game against Chelsea when Lucas was injured.)
- We won 7, Drawn 4 and lost 2.
- We scored 17 and conceded 12.
- We didn't have Gerrard fit for any of these games.

There really is not a lot of difference. To be fair, the only game were i felt we missed a DM was the Bolton game where we were getting over-run in the midfield....but that's because of Kenny having an off-day with the tactics and not because we missed Lucas.

So do we really need a DM? If yes, i think we need one who can make more of an impact than Lucas. He has improved season on season....but i really don't think he is a crucial player in our team.

With Lucas fit and firing we look like a top four team, without him we dont, simple really.

We scored and conceded just about the same number of goals...even without Suarez around.

We didn't look like a top-4 team at any point in this season, and also we were never in the top 4.

Yes. He would walk into our team at the moment, especially at Adam or Henderson's expense.

He is a better player than both of them.

Sure we've done OK without Lucas but it doesn't prove that we don't need another defensive midfielder.
You have to ask yourself why we have been starting with 3 central defenders in certain games?
Why is it that Adam and Gerrard aren't higher up on the pitch when we have three central midfielders?
Why don't we have a man behind Carroll?

The answer is as clear as day, we're compensating for missing Lucas.
The players in the middle are being asked to play an unfamiliar role in order to protect the defence.

I'd say that we desperately need a defensive midfielder. Spearing will do for now. 3 days left in the window.

For anyone who still doubts Lucas' contribution to the team, look at what a shambles we are without him. His improvement and impact to the team has been ignored by some and hugely underestimated.

The abuse he got was totally unwarranted but the the criticism sometimes justified. That he he used it as motivation to improve to the degree he has is testament to the lads mental strength. He'll be back better and stronger than ever.

Yeah, we're not going to finish 1st in the league like we did in previous years when he was a mainstay in the side.

Heh... do you get like a bat signal in the sky whenever any kind of vague Lucas criticism is made?

What would Lucas' signal be? A silhouette of a bad haircut...?

Apart from being a good player he really seems like such a decent bloke. His attitude is astonishingly positive in these cynical times.

Wouldn't that get confused too much with the Jordan Henderson signal?

Anyway, as Macca said, top bloke and a really humble, pleasant guy.

We have missed him badly though, no one can deny that. His last two performances vs City and Chelsea were amazing. We wouldnt be overrun in midfield like we do now with him in the side.

Definitely, I do like Lucas (though I do take the piss), he was excellent in those two games and had been for much of the previous 18 months.

I think Spearing has deputised pretty ably. Given the form he was in this season, Lucas' absence has been somewhat of a loss, but to suggest that our performances would have drastically been different with him around, is plain wrong.

I thought his passing was horrendous today, he really can't afford to take the time on the ball sometimes, he ends up gtting dispossessed too often.
