Argentina winger Maxi Rodriguez has arrived in Liverpool ahead of completing his proposed switch to Anfield.

The 29-year-old Atletico Madrid player is set to undergo a medical before signing an 18-month contract in a £1.5million switch.

He will then watch his new team-mates in action in Wednesday night's FA Cup third round replay against Reading at Anfield before returning to Spain to tie up the final details of his departure.

Rodriguez, who is a close friend and international team-mate of Reds midfielder Javier Mascherano, still has to agree his pay-off from Atletico.

Hoped

But it is hoped he could be back in England by the weekend to figure in Liverpool's trip to Stoke on Saturday.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had hoped the deal could have been completed last week, but the former Newell's Old Boys and Espanyol player was unable to finalise the details of his departure.

His impending arrival comes after Andrea Dossena left the Reds for Napoli, while Andriy Voronin moved to Dinamo Moscow.

These deals brought in funds totalling £6.5million, and Ryan Babel's name could soon be added to the list of departures now Benitez has been assured that he can have the potential £10million fee to strengthen his squad during this transfer window.

Benitez had previously been told to wait until the summer before spending on new additions.

So does anybody actually know what the fee, if anything, will be?
It says in the link, £1.5mil.

If Degen passed one i'm sure Maxi will have no worries.

I don't know why we even bother doing them.

Darren Anderton is currently licking his lips at the thought of a 6month deal.

Yeah but that's one article, about 10 say £1.5m, another 10 say 500k, another 10 on a free. Anybody know for sure/nearly sure (ie. a liccle birdy).

It would be very much in our best interests if could get him to sign a contract BEFORE he watches us play tonight.

if he is in fact a close friend of Mascherano, maybe that will play in our favor and keep Mascherano for another year on Merseyside.

I think it is possible that, with Maxi joining the club coupled with his goal celebration against Everton, there is a chance he may stay on with us.

Or Barca have came to their senses and realise they don't need him. City going for Viera, to me at least, indicates that Yaya Toure isn't for sale.

The summer could change that, of course.

I think it would be very nice for Masher to have a South American at the club who wasn't fucking shit
Indeed. Benitez has spent 33 million on South American 'talent', and only one of them has really been any good.

He did however also demand most of that money spent didn't he?

Strange post.

Oh, and by the top of my head I remember United having spunked in excess of £80M on South Americans without actually getting one right yet.

(Besides the one they loaned in West Ham so he doesn't count).

I thought Mascher might have gone this window, strangely it seems to be very quiet on Mascher links

regards
Really?

I don't think we'd have ever agreed to sell a player like Masher in the Jan window.

Not quite following your post, Kristian.

ANyway; 33 million?

Hmm.

Mascher - 18 million, Gonzalez - 2 million? Palletta - 2 million Lucas - 6 million...

Who've I missed out?

So going by that since 55% was a success ?

Didn't Masher cost in the region of £23M? The others around the £10M mark, spent on the likes of Lucas, Insua and Aurelio (freebee) I reckon.

The expensive one has been worth every penny and then some.

Sorry to be pedantic but there's no such thing as a freebie in football. I dare say Voronin cost us at least 5m.

Mascherano - 18.6
Gonzalez - 1.5
Lucas - 5
Leto - 1.8
Insua - 1.3
Cavalieri - 3.5
Paletta - 2
Aurelio - free
Pellegrino - free

I didn't get what khl meant either. Maybe that we recouped the money? Which might well be true for the couple of them who left but most are still here, underperforming. And its a pretty irrelevant point anyway

I think they can comfort themselves with all their league titles to be fair anyway

In a way I suppose yes. And in a way no.

But then 55% is still only average isn't it?

Valencia has been a big success. They've been wanking all over him on Redcafe.

Doesn't matter anyway. United's finances are no concern of mine and any mistakes clearly weren't that costly in terms of success on the field were they?
