Pow! Liverpool to battle United and Arsenal for Crewe starlet Powell

New boss Rodgers is willing to top Fergie's offer PLUS Kop seal swoop for Birmingham and England U16s midfielder Nabay

Local hero? Powell wants to stay in the north-west when he leaves Crewe

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to fight Manchester United and Arsenal for Crewe whizkid Nick Powell.
New Kop chief Rodgers is prepared to top the offers from United and the Gunners for the young attacker.
Powell is going to be cleared for talks with United chief Sir Alex Ferguson after his bid of £2million-plus down and installments that could take the total value to £5m was accepted by the Railwaymen.
Arsenal have offered more money for Powell, but Crewe surprisingly snubbed their approach.
Now Rodgers hopes he can step in and win the race with a better bid.

The auction has begun in earnest for an 18-year-old who is tipped for greatness, although Tottenham have dropped out because of the 'extras' that take his total fee beyond their valuation.
Powell will also have a say on his move - he wants to play first-team football and will want that chance either at his new club or by being sent out on loan for additional experience.
Ferguson has been working overtime to land Powell, who would also like to stay in the north-west of England - a factor which makes Rodgers' arrival in the hunt a real threat to United's plans.
* BUSY Liverpool have also won the race to sign Birmingham starlet Foday Nabay.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United were also chasing the midfielder, who has been playing above his age group in Blues' Under-18s side.
Anfield scouts had been eyeing Nabay long before Rodgers' appointment last week, and watched the Sierra Leone-born prospect play for England Under-16s last summer.
Liverpool will have to pay Birmingham only £70,000 in compensation, due to a loophole in Nabay's contract at St Andrew's.

Cool. least we're trying
I have a feeling we'll fail. When's the last time we managed to beat Man U to a player?
A hint, his name is Harry and he's an Aussie.

Silvestre, Vidic, Jones, Young all shafted us.

Hopefully we might get lucky again

Pesam's the man:

The one I can't wait to see is the Crewe kid Nick Powell who has only played 30 minutes of league football so far (he is only 16). It seems as if Dario Gradi (crewe manager) is going to unleash him soon and according to some older Crewe fans who saw; a young Danny Murphy, a young Rob Jones, young David Platt etc, Powell is apparently the most exciting prospect they've ever seen!

This time next year there'll only be one name on everyone's lips - Nick Powell of Crewe. Still only 17 and he looks like he could become the new Gerrard. We should offer £3m with extra's thrown in for; 100 appearances, England cap, league/euro title etc.

I'm not sure if we've any "link" with Crewe but we have been linked with a few of their players in recent years and we've been keeping an eye on Powell but then again so have a lot of Premier League teams. I saw him a couple of times recently and he immediately reminded me of a young Gerrard. He's strong, takes command of situations and looks like a very good footballer.

I mentioned him last season (before I'd seen him play) because some older Crewe supporters who had seen the likes of Rob Jones, Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton, David Platt etc all come through the Crewe ranks were suggesting that Powell was the most talented kid they've ever had at Crewe - From what I've seen I concur.

Can we offer Crewe Wisdom & Suso on loan for a season plus £1m for Nick Powell........PLEASE KENNY!

Lovely goal by Nick Powell for Crewe today.

And as I pointed out after his poor displays in the semi-final, they need to play him between the midfield and forward line i.e. in the Gerrard role.

Crewe Alexandra are set to net a club record fee for Manchester United target Nick Powell.

The Crewe Chronicle claims the two clubs have agreed a price for the 18-year-old who fired the Railwaymen to promotion glory at Wembley on Sunday.

It could be as much as a £4 million up front which could rise to £6 million depending on domestic and international appearances.

Talks on personal terms are believed to have begun and it is possible the transfer will be completed this week.

CREWE defender Adam Dugdale has urged Nick Powell to stay level-headed as football’s biggest names circle in on the Wembley man-of-the-match.

Hundreds of fans gathered at Gresty Road on Sunday evening to welcome the Alex heroes back to South Cheshire after their 2-0 League Two play-off final win over Cheltenham.

But while they are preparing to watch the Railwaymen in League One next season, 18-year-old forward Powell is expected to be heading two divisions higher.

Manchester United are the favourites to sign the former Sandbach High student, whose 15th-minute screamer against the Robins sent his side on course for promotion.

Crewe boss Steve Davis insisted there had been no firm bids for the teenager, but admitted something was likely to develop over the next fortnight.

Reports have suggested the fee for Powell could be anywhere between £3m and £6m.

Dugdale, aged 24, said there have been moments to take his breath away as he has watched Powell’s first season in senior football at close quarters.

He said: “If you have Nick Powell in your team you’ve got a chance no matter who you’re playing.

“He’s better than this level, actually he’s miles better than League Two.

“But it is for him to keep his feet on the floor and keep knuckling down. It’s going to be tough wherever he goes and he’s got a lot of potential to fulfil.

“He’s probably the best talent I have ever seen from someone at that age. He can do pretty much anything he wants to do with a ball at his feet.

“He’s only going one way – and that’s up, but I can’t stress enough how crucial it will be that he doesn’t get carried away. He must keep improving.”

Manchester United and Chelsea have been reported to be tabling bids for Powell this week, but Alex chairman John Bowler insisted cash was not the only consideration.

He said: “There is a time when it is right for our players to move on and Nick is at the front of that queue.

“We will have conversations with Nick and his family to gauge what is obviously right for us in terms of value, but also what is right for the player at this time.

“Dario Gradi is adamant that we do all in our power to make sure he goes to a club that can take him and make it a good move for his career because we have put a lot of investment in the lad.”

If we're really interested in Powell, we should sell him the fact that Crewe kids have a good history with us - and milk the relationship.

Silvestre, Vidic, Jones, and Young were the only ones we were directly vying for I think. Both were interested in Ronaldo and Torres, but we dropped our interest in Ronaldo a year before they got him. Likewise with United re Torres.

I know we and Arsenal have Powell watched regularly. Spurs have monitored Clayton for a while too.

Is Clayton any good?
I've only seen him twice and that was as substitute during the playoff matches but he seems to have a very good touch and very confident for a 17 year old. He will definitely be worth keeping an eye on next season.

If Powell has to choose from the Gooners, SHitty or Manure, I don't think we have much of a chance unfortunately

Well you never know. If he really does want to stay in the North West then that would rule out Arsenal, and he might think he has more chance of first team games at Liverpool.

Cheers

I saw him playing for the U17s in the world cup. You know the one where Sterling and Chalobah shined.
He sucked donkey balls. So in my eyes he still sucks donkey balls.

I hope you're right mate, but I'm lowering expectations already!
