Guessing the ability the spread the payments over time and maybe Leipzig were not willing to do the same? Plus some of the 45 million is bonuses I would guess. Additionally Wolves paid 13 million for a player who wasn't going to break in our first team.

1 in 3, for a player who is signicantly younger than our front three and who can play a number of positions. Wolves also play differently to us, in a more creative frontline and pressing higher he'll likely progress and improve further on that.

And probably about 80k a week less of a salary too. That's a fair whack over a 4-5 year contract

Pretty much everything to like about this signing. But the work behind the scenes has been absolutely immense.

I am actually going by the post I quoted, and I have to admit that I don't particularly paying much attention on players at Wolves either. So my mistake for not checking his stats.

He only scored 7 in the league season and had 1 assist, his domestic and Europa stats were far better but that could be down to the poor opposition.
If Klopp wants him and the club has paid £40m ish then they must see something, probably the same thing they saw in Salah and Mane?

I am as tall as Paul Gorst, so definitely no, not when standing.

Just look how often he gets on the box and scores. That's what we're missing at times.

I feel we'll start to see 4231 more this season, especially with Thiago here and a general need to innovate.

Bobby's finishing just isn't cutting it lately.

Trent and Robertson will absolutely love having Jota on the pitch.

I really think this kind of thinking played a big part in us not signing Werner to be honest.

    Stacks up really nicely.

He seems really effective at ball progression from the midfield to attack, which shows in his dribble success. Not sure he'll get the same amount of space or counter attack opportunities here. He'll have to get used to operating in tighter areas, but he looks to have all the tools to make a success of it.

yeah - that is a proper goal-scoring midfielder stat; all-rounder in cricketing terms. Just hope he survives the Klopp training sessions.

There is one aspect where Jota has an undoubted advantage over Werner:

I remember in 1994 wanting Brazil to so win that world-cup to get my love of football going again - amazing that one of those winner's son from that Brazil team is now playing for us. Just cannot believe this has happened, and also his dad was involved in that iconic celebration with Romario, and Bebeto - the 3 men and a baby in the game against the Dutch.

I don’t think you’re wrong re the payment terms, that’s definitely a factor. I think the two deals are actually completely different. Werner was £50m plus a massive signing bonus, plus huge weekly wages (that undoubtedly would have had a ripple effect through the squad and a bunch of lads looking for revised terms themselves). By comparison the fee being reported for Jota is clearly a FFP game (in the same way Hoever is never worth 10m) so that suits both clubs. The wages are very reasonable and the player looks like he has excellent stats and the right mentality to fulfil the role we want.

It’s a c.50m deal versus one that was more like 125m all in for Werner

Our top players are all on mega money so I doubt Werner would’ve caused shockwaves.

There was a big financial element, sure, but 3x seems a bit OTT.

As the player has previously talked about wanting to play I wonder whether a guaranteed starting position at Chelsea was always going to swing things in their favor.

I’d imagine we’d never have agreed to 300K+ per week in the first place, but if we had agreed to wages on par with Chelsea, you don’t think our top earners on less money would have kicked up a fuss?
