Overrated things

Anything you care to name.

The first I'll nominate is kind of a big one: 'the news'. Current affairs, according to the main broadcasters and the main papers.

I feel like it's seen as automatically meritorious to follow the news and to always know 'what's going on in the world'. I'm not sure it should be. Basically none of it affects our daily lives and even less can be affected by any response we might have. So I don't see that it's important or moral to follow it.

That leaves the question of whether it's merely interesting. Generally, I think it fails there, too. The one subject I'm interested in that the broadcasters generally consider worthy of attention is politics. That's it. And I can read about that in specialist publications, or listen to podcasts etc.

So yeah, I don't necessarily see that it's bad to be ignorant of a royal baby, or the migrants in Calais, or a strike that doesn't affect me, or a foreign war between countries that don't interest me. Mostly it's just boring.
