Reina readying exit: "It's not about being patient"

Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina has voiced his concern at the lack of competitiveness shown by Liverpool as speculation again rises that the Anfield number one could quit the club in the summer.

It is widely recognised that the shot stopper is frustrated at the way Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano have been allowed to leave Merseyside over the last two years and is weighing up the possibility of pushing for a transfer himself.

Last summer Arsenal approached the Reds with a bid thought to be in excess of £20 million only to have the offer rejected out of hand. It remains to be seen whether Arsene Wenger returns to negotiations at the end of the season although with Reina admired across Europe it appears the keeper will not be short of suitors.

Speaking at the weekend about Liverpool’s need to show ambition, Reina told the Daily Star:

"We have to strengthen. If we want to improve then we have to do that.

"It is our duty to be strong, to get better. The only thing I can do is train and do my best. Who knows if I have got years left?

"It's not about being patient. It's about the club winning and I want to be competitive. We used to fight to be among the top team and be in the Champions League.

"Sadly that's not the case now. I want to win titles."

I don't think he's said anything wrong there personally. He just wants to see the same as we all do this summer.

He really doesn't need to be saying this stuff, but it's not exactly an "I'm leaving", it could easily be interpreted as a message to the owners to back us in the Summer.

I've got a bad feeling about this though, I can't see him staying, especially if the stories about his contract clause are true.

I've made my peace with the idea he's leaving.

I suggest you all do the same, Avvy.

Sigh.

I wont be surprised if he leaves, tbh.

Ideas for replacements?

We've done the replacement thread already. To summarise I think it has to be one of the following; Neuer, Alder, Lloris and De Gea.

Bye Pepe, done with your constant your interviews and what we need to do better. I get it.
You are good but not that good...

arnt these the same comments just re-hashed by the shitty news of the world??

If we continue to progress Reina isnt going anywhere... If we dont improve then who can blame him.

I think this is right.

If he does leave, buy Lloris. He's a fantastic keeper.

I want Neuer LTW. Young, big frame, brave. I'm sold. Plus he is decent at peno's if I can remember.

So hard to find a top class keeper. I would just refuse point blank to sell him to a rival.

His options are actually severely limited then.

Maybe he can go play in Italy, but id just let the man know now before he starts agitating for a move, you aint going to Arsenal or United. Barca and Madrid dont need you. Where you going thats actually better than Anfield? Pepe have a think about this before you fuck up everything for the rest of us!

If he's got this reported £20m clause, he'll be able to go where likes, if they pay it.

BOO YA !

That would be excellent.

He's off.

It's one thing to be giving it all this a couple of months ago, but he knows as well as us that since Kenny has arrived we are currently the form team in the league. We couldn't be doing any better under a new regime - yet it's not enough. I just wish he'd shut the fuck up.

I don't care as long as we don't replace him with some bollocks like Robinson.

my feeling is, if anyone wants out let them go. we have big problems in our team that needs addressing and we shouldn't be held to ransom while we address those problems. if there is a ticking clock over our head then we may attempt to paper over cracks, tackling the symptoms rather then the cause. roy tried to quick fix attempt and all he succeeding in doing was padding out the squad with journeymen (meireles aside).

all our problems aren't going to go away in one summer of transfer activity. if pepe thinks that is what is going to happen then he may as well move on rather than waiting for us to get our shit together. get a talented keeper who buys into our long term project rather than someone that wants a quick fix.

I would hate losing him. But tbh if he doesn't want to be here, he can fuck off.
We don't need players that aren't commited.

BUT, I don't think he's set on leaving just yet. His comments are as much challenge to the owners that they need to invest this summer.

And these comments are old rehased by the Daily Star.

IF he leaves, I'd sign either Neuer or De Gea. Both excellent goalkeepers.

The "Daily Star" is a very down-market tabloid with the low journalistic standards that go with that. I wouldn't personally take anything in it as reliable. I certainly don't remember the "Star" breaking any genuinely important news stories.

Fuck Pepe, I'm sick to death of him mouthing off. What does he think our ambitions are? To be a mid table team? Get the fuck outta here!

He's frustrated about us selling off players who didn't wanna be here? We are too because there's nothing much we could do. They wanted to leave. We've had a crappy 18 months but for fuck sake leave if you want like the rest.

Things are on the up and are already better. Big summer ahead with or without you. What we need is unity in the squad not players mouthing off every chance they get. The Liverpool Way, get with the program!

I would personally go for jaskailainen (sp)? As pepes replacement, 5m would do it I reckon. Proven premiership keeper, and we can use the surplus to recruit attacking players, the areas that really need addressing.

Let's face it, he's one of the best keepers in the World, so he'll be hard to replace and we'll definitely be hard pushed to find someone better or with similar stand out attributes (presence, distribution, etc).. But if it means we get £20m and half of that goes on a keep while the other half goes on another player, then in our current predicament it's not that bad - provided we spend it well.

Exactly mark, the very top teams do much more attacking than defending and ultimately their is much less reliance on the goalkeeper. He is a very good keeper that's not in doubt, be he is replaceable, provided we avoid the scouts that arsenal have been using for their keepers ....

That's partly true but it is also much more difficult to be a 'keeper at a top team. The pressure is huge and only a select few can handle it. I hope Pepe stays as replacing a 'keeper can be very very painful.

Its a lot more than that though. World-class keepers at big sides will get called upon less than usual, but its the concentration required when they do have that stop to make, the dependability on them doing the relatively easy stuff, and the ability to inspire confidence into the back line that sets them apart.

Any compromises on any of those three can take the team down a couple of notches and make the difference at crucial times. Pepe doesn't only have these three, he has excellent distribution and speed for a goalie. There aren't many obvious replacements for what he brings to the side at all, and for those that may exist, we'd probably end up paying most of what we get for him for someone unproven in this league.

i really hope that £20m clause isn't true because i still think that significantly undervalues him. he's one of the best in the world and has 10 years left in him, i'd want more like £40m for the guy because any proper replacement will cost £20m anyway and still carry a risk of not working out/adapting to the premier league.
