If JAR was here now though, i suspect that most would be saying that we need a new LB still.

Agreed. Rafa's mistake was not the decision that we needed a replacement for JAR. It was his poor choice of the replacement in question.

I was never convinced we needed a replacement. He hadn't been up to his very best for 2 seasons or so, but he knew the Premier League inside out, was part of some fantastic defences over the years and was adaptable. At the time there were far more pressing priorities than removing a solid, dependable squad player.

Losing all that for £4-5M wasn't worth it. I guess the same can now be said of Arbeloa really.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter now. It's all backfired into this horrible mess and there's little which can be done now.
