2011/2012 - I am dreading it....

I wish people would stop saying we overpayed for Carroll. The Torres deal wasn't "we want £50 million" it was £15M and whatever Newcastle set as the price for Carroll, if that had been £25M then Torres would have gone for £40M.

Premature optimism mate. They have pills for it now

You meant premature ejaculation?

doesn't mean a fee wasn't agreed

Horses mouth in February;

Liverpool have come in for criticism after lavishing £35million on Newcastle to bring the unproven Carroll to Anfield - but Henry said the size of the fee was not a concern as it was always factored in to negotiations with Chelsea.

"The fee for Torres was dependent on what Newcastle asked for Carroll," Henry told The Guardian, explaining they simply wanted a difference of £15million. "The negotiation for us was simply the difference in prices paid by Chelsea and to Newcastle. Those prices could have been £35million [from Chelsea for Torres] and £20million [to Newcastle for Carroll], 40 and 25 or 50 and 35. It was ultimately up to Newcastle how much this was all going to cost. They [Newcastle] made a hell of a deal. We felt the same way."

With Ryan Babel moving to Hoffenheim for £6million, the difference on the Carroll deal allowed Liverpool to pay for the £22.8million arrival of Luis Suarez from Ajax.

However, Henry expressed surprise Chelsea were willing to go as high as £50million, questioning whether Roman Abramovich's club could meet UEFA's new financial fair-play rules.

"I was surprised Monday morning to receive an offer [from Chelsea for Fernando Torres] in that amount [£50million] at the same time they were announcing such large losses [£71million for 2009-10]," Henry said.

"The big question is just how effective the financial fair-play rules are going to be. Perhaps some clubs support the concept in order to limit the spending of other clubs, while implementing activities specifically designed to evade the rules they publicly support. We can only hope that UEFA has the ability and determination to enforce what they have proposed."

For Liverpool's part, Henry pledged to live well within the rules.

"We've always spent money we've generated rather than deficit-spending and that will be the case in Liverpool," he said, talking about the way in which his Fenway Sports Group operate the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

"It's up to us to generate enough revenue to be successful over the long term. We have not and will not deviate from that."

So I am wrong about over paying but still concern about Caroll's ability to fit into our style of play.

Hmm strange for this post to come from anyone bar me really.

I'm looking forward to next season.

We are finally getting the best out of our average to poor players (which hasn't happened since Rafa's early days)

We have money to invest. Even if we spend it on average player like Downing and Charles N'zogbia Kenny will get the best of them.

We have some terrific youth players coming through and the rest can finally see a link to the first team with dedication and hard work. We can look forward to alot more breaking through next season.

Even if we do not strengthen as we hope in the summer, with no European football injuries and fatigue should not be an issue.

No summer tournament for the majority of players means a very fresh squad to hit he ground running.

A great assistance coach in Steve Clarke.

A set of players who are actively and openly speaking out in favour of the manager and how happy and confident the club is (none of this happened with Roy, bar Stevie)

And most importantly there is zero pressure. Nobody outside of Andy's insane army expects a title challenge next year.

And finally we have Suarez and with him on the pitch anything is possible and any game is winnable.

So what your trying to say is that we have a chance of a title push?
That post confused me no end

DB, you should go join localny in his optimistic thread. This place is for the twitchy bummers.

I think we have a very good shout at being in the top 4 going into the business end of next season.

Anything more is a bonus at this stage.

Close the optimistic thread. It's too lonely over there...!

localny, sorry for not responding to your falling on your knees post earlier.... while the logic of not play europa league saves us some energy, i will only be convinced if the energy saved will propel us into the CL next year. As it is, we are not seeing anything positive yet. While I might have jumped the gun into pessimism, my optimistic meter will only start recording when any good news are confirmed. For a lack of news, I am drowning in pessimism.

Downing in bitter too, Young?

If you insist on hearing good news before being optimistic, why don't you insist on hearing bad news before being pessimistic?

BTW, since I know you're a fellow Christian, here's a thought for you. Pessimism is a mild form of atheism.

We're not signing God again, are we?

Arf.

He'd have had an absolute field day with some of today's Prem defences though. Wouldn't altogether surprise me if he still could now.

It is the lack of good news that is causing the pessimism.

Pessimism in football does not equates to pessimism in life and therefore I am not atheist.

As it is written, without vision (of good news) the people perish.

I don't buy that, Mike - football is part of life.

Besides, how can you *not* have a vision of a better future after the change of ownership and manager, and the signings we've already made and are looking to make in the summer? Get a grip, man.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be optimistic.

Rewind 12 months and we were about to lose rafa and enter an off-field & on-field flashpoint.

We've gone from cunt owners and roy to promising owners and the king.

We've gone From huff and puff Fernando Torres to Andy Carroll and the immense Suarez.

We'll be playing way less Sunday matches which is a biggy and we've been knocked off out perch and I dont think there could be a single manager in football more hungry for a bit of Manc related retribution than Kenny.

Clarke and the king have got some dollar and some time to get into the groove with the lads before august.

No uncertainty surrounding our future and as far as I'm aware , for the first time in a few years everyone at the club is pulling in the same direction.

Exciting times!

JJ, I believe! Help my unbelief.

Until I feel, see and touch the good that is to come.

Until then all are mere words that are yet to be fulfilled. Yes we have the return of the King. Yes we have Suarez our twinkle toe sure footed Legolas. Yes we have the returning Stevie our Gandalf. Yes we have Carra our Samwise. But the battle is long and wearisome, with all the Orcs and Trolls under control of evil Alex Saruman, we face formidable opponents.

I dread we are not battle ready.

I can understand Mike though.

You forget Malaysia is Manc country.

I know where he's coming from.

Excellent post.

Yes Malaysia is a Manc county where Alex rules! Where all and sundry danced to the rhythm of the devils week in week out. That is why I dread it on the anticipation that they might win Big Ears this weekend. I have almost switched off from facebook when they won number 19.

Fair point. I don't underestimate the size of the task, whether for Mike or for us. What I'm saying is that it's definitely doable and that we've made a good start on it.

Sure the Fellowship had a happy ending but will real life imitate fiction? Our hope is as long as the neck of the giraffe. Just that I am getting weary like Frodo on the way to the mountain. I dread the weariness of perhaps a long long journey.
