Anfield 1969

So I did a little digging.... see this game Dundalk V Liverpool 1969, European Fairs Cup. It's famously the game Houllier attended with Patrice Bergues, as a student in Liverpool, and fell in love with the club. Why did I do the digging, because as it happens, my Father played for Dundalk in this 10-0 drubbing...

It was the end of his career, having played in England before returning to Ireland. The Liverpool line up that day was below. For some reason, I never looked into this deeply before but the Houllier connection made me so surprised. It's a nice read!

He told me today "Don't remind me" when I brought the game up 🙂 - competitive forever.

I brought my daughter to a kid's birthday party a few months ago and the little girl's grandfather told me he'd been in Belfast once, in 1984 watching Panathinaikos playing Linfield in a European cup match. He must have been a hardcore fan to travel to Belfast to watch a football match in those days. Anyway, I texted a Linfield supporting mate about this and he replied with photos of the match programme. His da had also been at the match and had kept the programme.

"Blues were 3-0 at half time. Drew 3-3 so we're knocked out 5-4. Panathinaikos went on until the semi finals."

Another edit. The bloody programme was 50p. A bit steep for 1984 if you ask me.

You could consider writing to the club and see if they have footage of the games.

great idea. I didn't think they'd have video of such games back then, you think they might?

I found a 1966 FA Cup quarter final video of him playing v Chelsea a few years back on youtube (Pathe news).

No harm asking... especially if you've got a good story to tell them to motivate them to do some searching for you. There are some clips on youtube of our games in that era, but not put up by the club. If anybody should have some footage, I'd think the club should be the one. Unless the camera crews weren't there because ... "Guys, it's only Dundalk"... 😀

I can't find the link now but the Iceland national film archives recently found what had thought to be lost footage of our very first European match in Reykjavik in 1964. It's actually not bad footage either.

I know it's only loosely related to the topic but thought people might be interested.
