Having someone with real pace and strength and can get in behind is key to unlocking Wirtz. Not only does it stretch the play and give more space for the midfield but Wirtz has the vision to spot those runs and make the passes. It's not the only thing holding Florian back, but it's part of it. There's not one player in our team that can regularly beat a man, similar to how Salah used to, or Doku did against us, and that's the sort of basic level shit that matters, regularly gets understated and was seemingly overlooked in the summer. In their defence, it's likely Hughes knew about this release clause and maybe part of the reason for not signing Guehi was to hold money in reserve to Semenyo and take Guehi in the summer. It's back fired in the short term, but that could have been the thinking. We could have saved money elsewhere and prioritised Guehi but that's another discussion.
