He's cover for Downing on the left more than any cover for Suarez and Carroll folks.

I doubt that. He's pacy but he's no winger.

he looked at his most dangerous for City when played as a left-forward so I can see where Ryan is coming from.

This. And judging from the clip Hansern posted earlier, he played mostly on the left for Cardiff as well. It's where he's always looked at his best.
It's been a tendency for us to play attacking players in roles unsuited for them (getting players who like running on to the ball to play in positions where the ball's played to their feet, and getting players who like having the ball played to their feet to play in positions where they're asked to play off the defence's shoulder). It's not always thought through, but it can be a terrible mismatch.
Bellamy is clearly to my mind a player who likes having the ball played to his feet, and using his pace and ability to run at players. I'd be disappointed if we play him up top or of the defence's shoulders as he's going to just be uninvolved and caught offside half the time. He's a player who needs to be slightly deeper and more invovled in the game, and the wing forward role (on the left preferably) is really what is thus best suited for him.

See where you're coming from, but Downing's main role (albeit not his only one) is to cross the ball in for others, whereas Bellamy's has always been to do more of the finishing himself. It's true that he has a habit of playing primarily down the left, but the same applied to Henry and (spit) Torres.

Torres?

Well, yes, he was always drifting over to the left and starting his runs from there.
