I was reflecting on the game during my drive to work this morning and couldn't help but think of Alec Baldwin's speech in Glengarry Glen Ross. That's what I feel our bunch of losers in midfield need - a fucking kick up the ass. Unless they're handed things on a plate they seem to just let things pass them by. It was the same against Stoke - they simply worked harder and wanted it more.

You know what it takes to play in Liverpool's midfield:

And our fucking chumps have been found wanting too many times. Maybe we should take Blake's advice and get rid of their fucking asses because a loser is a loser.

I'm afraid we need a bit more than an ass kicking in midfield. Like you say, we need more, we've got no steel and no one who is determined to get a foothold. At least Momo used to kick people and blind the opposition by making them look at the flood lights all the time, you know, so it was a fair game on his part.

It's been lacking bite for an age now, ever since Masch decided to piss off and win trophies. I like Lucas, he showed prior to his injury that he can read the game up well and break up play; he's going to take a while to get that back. Allen has been getting a lot of criticism on here, some of it has been deserved. However a ball winning DM is not his role and the fact he is playing it highlights the weaknesses in the middle of the park. Henderson I think can play this role but how long do we wait (and suffer) until he becomes accustomed to the role, if at all.

We need to make the purchase of a top quality DM a priority, it shouldn't cost the earth, just look at Diame or Cabaye. Until we get this area sorted out teams will run through us like 'a sharp knife through warm butter' - yeah I know that is a shit analogy, but it sounded cool in my head.

That's why I'd take a risk on M'Vila - he's perhaps the kind of player we need. A bit insane, but a proper nasty DM

Well if he really was Wonderman, would we need a DM?

I might be predictable, but it's because as usual I'm right about 18 months before the rest of the site realises what's necessary. It's not my fault you're all slow.

Most people said we needed more steel in there last season though, even when he was playing well, he's never really been an industrious DM, he was more in the Didi mold the way he was playing early last season, reading the game well and breaking things up, we've always needed someone in there who would run around and harass people, that's why he got paired with Spearing a fair bit and it worked to a degree. Someone has to go though if we bring in another, that much is obvious.

You're not right though Ross, you're wrong. You're just a bit of a tit really who thinks he's right all the time.

Right can some independent observer confirm whether or not we have Lucas in the squad.

Thanks

The point being......we need an aggressive DM because Lucas is in the squad...? Riiiiiiight, I see now.

The guys has just, I repeat just come back from two, that's right TWO mo-fo career threatening injuries. Is not going to go back to the form he showed prior to the injury just yet!

We need another DM, namely a Masch type of DM.

It's not just about one player anyway. There are quite a few that need to step up and start taking responsibility. Alonso didn't wait for Maschareno to be aggressive before he started playing and Maschareno didn't run around like a blue-arsed fly kicking people either.

"Nice guy? I don't give a shit. Good father? Fuck you -- go home and play with your kids!"

This team needs some fucking winners in the side. The talent is there (to a degree). The mentality isn't.

ACL isn't career threatening these days. That said there's no point judging him on this season.

I don't like having midfielders who are so limited that they can only do one thing well in midfield

Masch was very good for us, did one thing very very well and pretty meh at everything else. Lucas, before the injury was reading the game brilliantly and broke up play continiously. As you mention, I would'nt want to rely on Lucas because it will take him 6 months to get back to where he was and thereforre I rather have a specialist one of the key areas we have been lacking this season, namely a DM, that might also free Allen up to play further up the field.

I don't see why the focus is always on Lucas. He's a perfectly decent footballer who can fulfil a role. We talk about limitations but players like Mascherano also have their limitations. The crux of the situation is simple for me - we need need a better balance of midfielders and we certainly need more creativity - thats more of a priority than a new DM for me.

So you want to splash out on a transfer fee and four years wages for a player we need for 6 months?

Patience is better. We have to decide whether Lucas is a first team player long term or not. If he's not then get someone, if he is then its better to do nothing.

I think our midfield has largely been poor for the season - I've little or no confidence in any arrangement of them being particularly good. For now I'd be looking at hanging onto Shelvey Suso and Allen and buying players to play with them. The rest can go provided there's a good offer

Why have a DM at all?

I largely agree with most of that but I think we need see more from the likes of Shelvey, Suso and Allen as well. Jury is still out for me. I think the problem is also what quality players we can both attract and afford. Reality is a motherfucker but it's not going to be easy to do that unless we get a lot smarter

The players at there to be had, I just think the club has been extremely lazy in the scouting/imagination department.

We need to strike earlier for obviously talented players.

Again, I'm agreeing with that - that's what I mean about getting smarter.

Our new scouting network has been in place for a month or so though. Before that it was pretty non excistent.

If we dont see any results from that work in this window, we'll hopefully see it in the summer transfer window.

That said, I'd take a chance with M'Vila. We need more bite and agression.

I think Rodgers underrated the need for steel in the midfield. Maybe he thought we could keep more possesion than we do manage (now I am thinking in top games, not against underated shit like Fulham and QPR). The English league is very tough, with extreme tight pressure and high tempo. In many games it is impossibble to play around the opposition and keep both the high movement and pace on the ball for the full 90 minutes. It takes to much energy. then you need ball winners, that are able to destroy the opposition plan and just bite the ancles out there. it doesnt fit with Rodgers plan A, but it has been needed at times. So maybe we have a good but unbalanced midfield.

The back 4 is a little over exposed. Our midfield is too nice. We need a big horrible grock who will kick seven bells 'o shite out the opposition. Can we find a player who's fans have given him a nickname like 'The Beast' from somewhere? I'm thinking an Eastern European who was born in a cow shed or an Argentinian street tough.
