Butland

I remember when he was meant to be dead good, but that link didn't fill me with confidence. Our scouts seem to know their stuff anyways

I can imagine Van Dijk having everything under control, and out of nowhere Butland goes through the back of him with both feet, and as he is falling to the ground with ligaments snapping one after another, him screaming Adrian towards the bench, before the side of his face slams onto the turf.

He's English which prob helps get someone else in the squad as well if we fancy it.

He's not shit but he clearly lacks confidence for a while and throwing him into a derby won't solve that

His agent probably wants to get him a move. This gets the name out there. Other clubs might bite. I doubt it's anything more than that.

He is shite, but thinking about watching adrian again just makes me feel a bit queasy

He's low on confidence at stoke - he would either sink or swim if his next game was as the GK saviour for the PL Champions against their rival who are currently top of the league! Even writing that scenario out is LOLs.

I've no idea how to post old comments into a thread but I've just looked back for my previous comments on Butland since 2012 and I was very critical of him all the way along. I mentioned him at least 8 times and each time suggested we should NOT be looking to sign him. My opinion hasn't changed - Adrian makes fewer mistakes.

Just quote yourself (the +quote link when making multiple quotes).

Maybe we're getting Butland just for practice after Lonergan left (assuming he's actually left at all). Funny after all those keepers we keep buying and still we feel we don't have enough quality there.

The only truly reliable reserve keeper we've ever had was Steve Ogrizovic, but he only played about four times in five years because our first choice keeper never got injured and didn't need 'rests'. He was reliable, however, because he was a good keeper who actually played regularly for the reserves. It's rare enough these days to get a good reserve keeper; it's even rarer to get one who doesn't need to play regularly to be mentally ready for the first XI.

The best/least worst thing the club can do is work on Adrian's confidence, set down some clear and simple 'dos and don'ts' for him and his back four to follow until Becker is back, and get on with it.

Improve our overall defensive team play in transition and we won't shine such a spotlight on our defense and keeper.

Bit harsh on Friedel there.

Haha. I can’t remember thinking he was that great for us to be fair. He was better at other clubs. Mind you, we had a very, very ropey defence at the time. Phil Babb was still something of a regular.

I always thought Mike Hooper was a fairly decent back up keeper. Every year or so he would come in for a couple of games, usually do pretty well and sometimes stay in the team for a bit longer. Obviously eventually it would become clear why he was only a reserve keeper, as he wasn’t really good enough to be first choice, but I don’t recall him being anywhere near as dodgy as many others we have had since.

Hooper was OK, and I seem to recall had one or two lengthy runs in the team, keeping his place, as you said, even after Brucie was fit.

That was the sad era when we didn't really have any proper number ones, just several number twos, in every sense. Brucie was way past his best by that stage. Hooper looked like an actor playing a goalkeeper.

Maybe time has dulled my memory

I thought Pegguy Arphexad was quite decent, and he never embarrassed himself when he had to play. Although he didn't play much, so he didn't really get a chance to prove himself or embarrass himself.

I think for any goalkeeper, and especially a #2 goalkeeper, it is important to have an established defense, with a good leader, in front. If the defense has problems - injury or form-related - it exacerbates the goalkeeper's problems. I used to notice how much better Simon Mignolet looked when he had a settled defense in front of him.

He won about five trophies too (sort of), and I don't think we ever lost when he played. As you say, he didn't have to play very often, but still

I watched him play for Leicester a few times before he signed for us, and always thought he did a decent job for them. He was behind Kasey Keller, so he didn't get much game time there either.

Apparently he played in 39 games in about 15 years according to Wiki, winning 6 trophies

We all surely agree though, don't we, that none of them play enough reserve games? It's quite absurd that such a key specialist position has back-up that only trains. Keepers need rhythm, they need game situations to get and stay sharp, they need to have the weekly dynamic with a back four, they need to play. If you actually wanted to undermine any keeper's chances of doing themselves justice in the odd game for the first team, you'd do exactly what is now done - you stick them on the bench for months on end. It's crazy.
