Can Alli save a pen?

Have to say, that's a bit concerning. Not one saved penalty in 2 seasons and he didn't look confident at all. He doesn't seem to face a lot of penalties, I only saw 17 over his whole career, not including shoot-outs – 5 saved. But not sure how many of the remaining 4 (other than Mahrez) were actually saved or missed.

UPD: Found a couple of saves! One hit straight a him, one a panenka that was well-saved, but a team-mate turned in the rebound.

It's much harder for GKs to save penalties these past 2 seasons with the new encroachment rules for GKs (punishable with a yellow card) and refs/VAR really cracking down on it big time.

Today Martinez didn't save any or get close to any either.

Nowadays GKs have to either go early and guess, or require a penalty to be poorly struck to be saved.

Pendulum heavily favours the forward now.

I hage no stats to back this, but I think most penalties saved in shootouts are either from really shit penalties or keepers cheating by coming off the line.

The second option now has been taken out by VAR, so you're mostly hoping for a poor penalty.

That said, Alisson seems kinda stiff on penalties. Generally keepers who do well in shootouts tend to try and move around as much as possible (probably puts off the taker).

He was actually trying all kind of tricks – clapping his hands to put off one taker, than moving around for the next one. None seemed to work, in fairness to Arsenal all their penalties have been top-drawer, and in the end it looked a bit desperate.

Lots of great keepers looked lost at penalties, the likes of Buffon, Cech etc. But I always thought it's kind of an important facet of a goalie's game, since a penalty shoot-out could potentially determine something like the CL or World Cup final. Hopefully this disappointment will given Alli and coaches something to work on.

The only trick you need to try as a Liverpool keeper on penalties is the wobbly legs. Surely Achterberg has them practising that!

I would say it is hard to judge him on today. I’d guess taking a pen inside an empty is easier than if it was full. Bar Brewster’s efforts all the pens looked easy.

That's a good point. Had the ground been full, I think we would have seen a couple blasted down the middle. Arsenal players were calmly putting them in the corners like at a training session. Our players were more visibly fired up and emotional.

Below par from what I've seen but thankfully we haven't had many to face.

All a keeper can really do is guess the right way and go as late as he can.
