It also means a lot of clubs are in the market for a top Centre Back. I hope Hughes doesn't try to be too clever for our own good.
Saw this yesterday and, for a brief moment, thought he might get linked with us — after all, he played under Slot and was signed by Hughes. But then again, he’s 28 and would probably want regular first-team football.

I heard on a podcast (may have been Momo's one) that we can't sign a foreign CB in January unless we ditch one from our squad (Mo?) That cuts down the list a bit.
Also, I believe we are not allowed to sign mongs, so you can remove Maguire
By going on a free, he is obviously after some dough so he is not going to give up a big pay check that only one of the top clubs can offer him. I will let Konate go since he isn't going to sign, bring in Guehi and Senesi. Senesi is a proven premier league CB, not too bad for a 3rd/4th choice.
Virg, Guehi, Senesi, Gomez, the Italian kid - should be a good lineup with net zero transfer fees.
I mean out of the free transfers he seems the best option if we are going down that route. Premier league proven and probably on the smallest wage on that list.
If we can somehow find another 30-50m quid for a flashy 3rd choice CB obviously it will be the preferred choice.

I think that not only are we at the limit for foreign players, but we are only one away from the overall limit as well.
So without removing players we only have space for one home grown player.
There's a few who could be ditched I guess though.
On a sidenote, Semenyo qualifies as a homegrown player
Not hugely here to make a case for him but we have no credible options at LCB for the cups and we are setting ourselves up for disaster playing Virgil relentlessly
Guehi makes more sense though
Joel Ordonez or Jeremy Jaquet should be the two we look at. Both have been scouted pretty extensively appaz.

Before we move forward with our signings, we need to create an identity - a style of play. We spent nearly a decade remagining our club - youth teams to first team in Klopp's style of play. When Slot was hired, one of the main reasons put forward was the continuation of that philosophy.
This season, we seem nothing like a Klopp team. Our signings also lack a common theme. It looks like a bunch of players thrown together, with no clear idea of how they'll work together.
Because of the identity running through this club's veins, Klopp was able to use youngsters to plug the gaps when emergencies arose. Slot was also sold to us as a developer of young talent. We have seen no evidence of that. Every half-decent youngster has been sold. Yes, they were not perfect. But we will never have the money to create an ideal squad. We had several youngsters who could do a job when called upon, and they all have been sold. If I were the parent of any young talent, I would advise my son to stay away from Liverpool.
I don't have any substantial evidence, as I am not party to any inside information. But from the outside, looking at our moves, it appears to be a systematic decision to dismantle and move away from Klopp's style. Which is ok, I guess. To a certain degree, I respect that. The magic sauce that made Klopp-ball work was Klopp. But then, unless we have a new identity, a new vision, a style of play where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, we can buy Guehi, Semenyo, Maldini, Baresi, Aimar, Figo, Zidane, Roberto Carlos, and there will always be holes to plug in the squad.

I can't shake the feeling that Hughes and Edwards are secretly building a team for Xabi, despite no assurance or encouragement that he'll ever want to manage us.

For a CB all we need is a player who can play a high line (pace), strong in the air and technically adept (passing and control) ... oh and isn't made of matchsticks. There are surely lots of CBs who fit that mould.

I agree to an extent, but the transition away from Klopp football started pretty quickly after Slot came in.
More controlled, less chaotic and heavy metal football. Must be pretty difficult for a manager to come in after Klopp and try to change the DNA of the team. I pretty sure he has an idea of how this team will look and play, but at the moment I think we are far from it. Very far. Whether that is down to him, a generational change of players or that we're in the middle of a rebuild is unknown. But we're selling him short in many ways and discredit his managerial ability.
We're at a crossroads though, so interesting to see where we go from here. Edwards and Hughes are building a team and a structure though. For who is the bigger question.
