What games have we played like champions?
It’s not a throw away statement at all. Had we done real analytics looking at profiles we wouldn’t have broken our transfer record three times.
We started playing 4-3-3. With a massive fee for Wirtz who can’t play in that system. Same for Frimpong. Two CFs for over £200 million to share the same place. Now we’ve switched to a more accommodating 4-4-1-1/4-4-2 which means Salah isn’t needed meaning his contract renewal was stupid. Had it been a proper plan to have a formation to accommodate the signings we would’ve played that from day one of preseason. Not fumbling our way into November and throwing away the league.
We still didn’t address centre back or more defensive minded midfielder. So yes. We signed names not profiles.
Wirtz can play on the left in a 4-3-3, but thats irrelevant really as Slot's preferred formation is 4-2-3-1. But Wirtz can play in any formation. Left or central.
But Diaz was playing most of his last season as a 9 as well so not sure what's your point.
Anyway Wirtz is here, Diaz is gone. That's that.
Wirtz was brought to play 10. He has been playing on the left because he was ineffective in the number 10 role. Wirtz lacks the pace to play the left channel at a high level in the PL. He also lacks the in-your-face, intense, lightning-dribbling ability on the ball that Diaz and Suarez have.
Yes, his dribbling compilations in the Bundesliga are impressive. But that is where defenders respectfully stay 3 feet away from you and don't chase you back once you go past them. If we wanted someone to play on the left, we shouldn't have spent 125 million on Wirtz. We should have looked at someone with a Barcola profile - intense dribblers with pace that frightens defenders. Or better still, saved the transfer fee and handed Diaz a new contract.
The point is that we did not seem to have a clear identity or a plan when we splurged out all that money. Diaz may have played as a number 9, but he will be far more effective on the left channel compared to Wirtz.
True and also not true. It's position dependant.
For a CB all we need is a player who can play a high line (pace), strong in the air and technically adept (passing and control) ... oh and isn't made of matchsticks. There are surely lots of CBs who fit that mould.
And I thought things are beginning to look up.
Maybe give it a rest until we lose to Spurs or something aye?
