“We had an offer from Tottenham of £250,000, which we received on Saturday afternoon. Then it was upped to £500,000 on Monday morning, and I think that is insulting.
“Even the £500,000 they offered was half now and the rest paid in a year’s time. I can’t even offer a reaction to that.
“I just think an offer like that for Everton’s captain is a disrespectful offer to the club and I think it is a disrespectful offer for a player of Phil’s qualities.
“I could understand it if he had six months to go on his contract, but he has 18 months left, he is our captain and leader and He has played more or less every game for Everton.
“I can only say it is as surprising an offer as I have known in my career, and it simply doesn’t recognise how important a playe he is.â€
"We have managed to keep hold of Charlie and I am pleased about that," Oyston told Sky Sports News.
"I think it would have been a shame to break the squad up and to really break up what we have got here and what we have achieved for the sake of short-term gains, so I think overall we are quite satisfied with how the day has panned out.
"We have not been near to losing him. There have been various toings and froings but nothing that was likely to happen today."
Surprise
Questioned on Tottenham's late interest and whether Liverpool had increased their offer, Oyston added: "There have been also sorts of toings and froings but they are probably too numerous and lengthy to mention.
"There has been a lot of interest from four or five clubs."
