Clattenburg

The evidence of the assistant referees, Michael McDonough and Simon Long, together with the fourth official, Michael Jones, stands to be crucial. Clattenburg was wearing a microphone and each member of his officiating team would have been able to hear what he said throughout the 90 minutes. The former World Cup referee Graham Poll said that if Clattenburg had been out of line with his language, he would be brought to book.
"Assistant referees ... if they heard Mark Clattenburg made inappropriate comments, they will report it," Poll said.

Yeah.. And if they saw an Offside they would wave the flag....

"Spanish twat" isn't racist, it's xenophobic. I don't get why hacks never get this. All the same, it sounds more and more like he's blown it.

if he said monkey, he's fucked ...

I don't agree with this. The term "monkey" as applied to a misbehaving child or adult, is long-established and has no racial connotations. If this is what Clattenburg said, and he goes on to suffer any kind of punishment, then I think anti-racism is getting a bit Kafka-esque and sinister.

SSN were reporting that the other officials on duty are backing Clattenburgs version of events.

I wonder if the conversations are recorded

Kafka-esque is correct. People use the term monkey all the time with zero reference to race. If he called Mikel it I'm certain he's called tons of white players it too.

This world can get to fuck anyway. The police are investigating... I mean just fuck off.

The police are obliged to investigate because they have received a complaint from a member of the public . . . . . the chairman of the Society of Black Lawyers. He's just been on the radio. He says he isn't interested in football but someone rang him up and told him about it.

Also, people use the term negrito all the time with zero reference to race.

They're not recorded, but they should be. I Imagine you would hear some very bad language from the players if it were, Rooney in particular.

It's a bit ironic, given the recent controversy over refs allowing their opinions about certain players to influence their judgements, that the same bias is evident now. I suspect that if, say, Mark Halsey had been accused of this, most in football would be desperately trying to disprove it. Clattenberg, on the other hand, is one of the least popular refs in the game as far as players are concerned, because evidently he makes even Graham Poll seem modest and engaging. Many management teams also view him as an insufferably pompous and patronising twit. So unless he's got a brilliant defence he's buried.

Eventually the conversations will have to start being recorded, to prevent frivolous complaints from being made. And then lookie what we have here... 90 minutes of a stupid official giving stupid explanations to the players for his stupid decisions. Then real complaints can start to be made about their negligence, and no bullshit doctored match report after the game will save their negligent arse.

I gotta say Dantes... You called it ages ago. The precedent for idiocy has been set by giving pointless bureaucrats with zero consideration for nuance or ambiguity the reigns. Now anyone can point and twist any words and the FA has to squirm further into the corner. It's excellent.

Although the FA doesn't really answer to anyone so no doubt they will find a way out of it easily enough.

They will, of course they will... But they'll come out of it looking even more stupid than before.

This is all most brilliant in my opinion. They made their choice this time last year, so now the complaints can carry on rolling in one after another.
Yes - the accusation is in itself sufficient evidence to secure a conviction.

I bet it's a right barrel of laughs working inside the FA headquarters. It would be like working with Mr. Bean and Frank Spencer at the same time. The days probably fly by.

On Monday morning there they all probably turned up for work an hour early because they forgot to turn their clocks back.

Yes but Sir Alex keeps his eye on them and makes sure they take the right decisions when they start to stray.

Indeed, said it yesterday. It's going to be very difficult to row back from prosecuting anyone for any allegation now unless in future they record all interactions.

The FA richly deserve the huge headache they now have, relying on guidance by disinterested QC's they have on retainer and influenced by agenda driven Executives (who have conflicts as they are associated with some clubs), biased and venal Managers and fans and the usual assortment of sensation seeking journos and the usual internet experts.

They need to treat allegations of 'verbals' on the pitch as ending at the final whistle unless there is clear proof to support an allegation, not 'probability' which essentially means one mans word against another.

Even if they record all future interactions, they already set the precedent of using the objective test. So it doesn't matter what the poor fucker actually meant by his words. As long as the prosecution are well-paid enough to show that the word is objectively insulting... he goes down. And that's that. Monkey is objectively an insult.

Oh and if it's not an insult in the UK, don't worry about that because the FA expect you to not use words if they are an insult in any culture. So fuck it, Obi Mikel grew up in a village called Yonituti somewhere in Somalia, and in their local dialect, "You're booked" is a racial slur of the highest order. And look here are these Somali language experts to testify to that fact. So ban him. Ban the Racist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cultural ignorance is no excuse!!!!!!!

It is going to be very interesting to watch the FA handle this situation. With Suarez and Terry, they let the affected parties be tried in the court of public opinion for months. After gauging which direction the wind is blowing, they acted and provided a sentence which was consistent with the public opinion.

This one appears to be more complex.

and Oh... When I said "It is going to be interesting, I meant it is going to be fun 🙂) "
