Well this is weird. The local press say we defo want him and that he wants to come here. 8m is bugger all in this market. Doesn't make sense.

Maybe scouts at Anfield are telling the management to not believe the hype?

Nah, if he goes Sunderland he'll be at Manure next.

As I'm typing this I realise this did not happen with Henderson and there's absolutely no basis for my assumption.

Starting to get pissed off with all this to be honest.

Losing out to Sunderland in the transfer market over a few Million(fuck all in footballing terms), supposedly needing to sell Raul Meireles to raise funds, still fucking about with this Adam deal, and Gael fucking Clichy and Aaron Lennon are on the radar. >🙁 >🙁

Same old Liverpool in the transfer market.

I highely doubt we have to sell to buy. And I can only imagine that we dont want Wickham if we havent bid for him, or else we would have matched the bid. Our interest must be elsewhere.

It depends how much we want to buy.

Considering the amount of money being chucked at Adam and Downing I doubt these 'transfer failures' are linked to a lack of finances.

"If" we are interested in him i'd rather we walk away than get bent over on the fee. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for a top draw player, but not for someone who seems to be a bit of a gamble even at a reasonable price.

Every single player that signs is a gamble though. Some are bigger gambles than others, but Wickham's 18 and has great potential.

I'm really disappointed it seems we're missing out on him.

Im not really that convinced to be honest. He seems OK. But he hasnt done anything extraordinery. Recently he was selected to play for the u21 but he didnt even get to play. Now imagine Owen or Fowler at 18.

A bit strange though, with all this potential only sunderland have bid for him. 13 mill is to much for this lad imho anyway.

As you say "some are bigger gambles than others".

It might be easy to figure out that i don't really rate the lad.

No one knows if we've even bid, whether or not we're interested or what price we're willing to go up to.

It makes me laugh, people moan in other threads about overpaying for players and then Sunderland bid (reportedly) and we haven't yet and now it's "losing out to Sunderland for the sake of a couple of million".

Whatever happens we should always have a price we're not willing to go beyond, we must have some set budget and some scruples about what we should pay and what's value for money. I realise that we could apply to this to Downing, but that's the point, people are moaning in one thread about overspending and then moaning in a thread about a Championship player that we're not willing to spend whatever it takes, which in this case seems at least £10m, £4m more than what United paid for Hernandez and £7m more than what Chelsea paid in compensation for Sturridge.

If we think 13 mill is to much for an unproven 18 year old, then fine. Its effectively the same amount we paid for Henderson who has 2 years of Premiership football under his belt.

I dont get the panic tbh. Its mass hysteria on every Lfc forum. The european trsnsfer window opens on friday ffs.

Henderson was overpriced, of that there's no doubt, and the fact that he's trebled his wages to £60,000 per week is ludicrous saying as he's proved fuck all in the game.

I'm not saying Wickham is worth this or that, but i'd be really surprised if Sunderland were paying £13 million up front for him. It's a risk whatever way you look at it, but he's a very talented striker and has all the tools to take the Premier League by storm for the next 10-15 years.

I'm pissed off we're losing out to Sunderland for him. Is that such a crime?

Kenny may though. In fact Wickhams goalscoring record is very similar to Shearers before Kenny transformed into the striker he became. Wickhams much younger though.

We're not losing out on him if we havent matched Sunderlands bid, he's not chosing them over us.

Henderson was 13 mill with 3 mill in add ons confirmed by Comolli. Thats not to bad a deal imho.
Stoke just bid 16 mill for Dann and Jerome ffs, the market has gone crazy.

But there's losing out to Sunderland and there's realising he's not worth the asking price. We might not be that interested (or at all), he might want a guarantee of first team football, no one knows. Does anyone really believe we lost out to Newcastle for that French sick note? We have and are overpaying for players, but we can't moan about it on one hand and then advocate it on the other.

He's costing effectively what Ming cost us.
