It's not strictly 4%. You're ignoring statistical mechanics. When you have an accumulation of 4% transfers that keep failing to happen, then the further and further you get down that sequence the closer you are to its end. I explained this in a blackjack thread a few years ago. So you have to uplift that 4% to take account of the failure to land Taribo West, Freddy Adu, Zidane, Quaresma, Del Piero, and so forth up until Gotze.

I really don't get the "lure of the CL" thing when players go to teams who have practically zero chance of doing particularly well. Great, so you want to test yourself against the best players, why not go to a team where you can do that fairly regularly in the domestic league, a team that has a chance to get into Europe and get back among the elite and actually be competitive with it.
I think it's a smart move on his part - test himself at that level for the club he loves, and then sign for Liverpool next year. I'm cool with that china.
