James McCarthy Official Ireland Debut

Forget Wayne Rooney or Jack Wilshere, the roar that greeted Wigan midfielder James McCarthy when he came off the bench against Macedonia on Saturday for his first competitive outing for the Republic of Ireland has to go down as one of the loudest ovations for a newcomer in recent memory.

The reason the 20-year-old was greeted so warmly at the Aviva Stadium was that his appearance finally brought an end to speculation that the Glasgow-born youngster was considering shifting allegiances to Scotland, and that cameo will be follow by a first start against Uruguay on Tuesday.

Apparently Robbie Keane reacted as if the applause was for him when McCarthy came on in his place.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish continues to keep tabs on Wigan's James McCarthy
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER

Liverpool are continuing to monitor Wigan midfielder James McCarthy.
The Republic of Ireland international turned down Liverpool to join Wigan from Hamilton Academical for £1million in 2009.
But manager Kenny Dalglish rates him highly as he looks to bring in young talent to bolster his squad.
Dalglish sent his assistant Sammy Lee to watch the 20-year-old during the Latic's 1-1 draw with Everton last weekend.
Liverpool are also watching St Etienne's Idris Saadi, 18.

Starting to think that McCarthy is ahead of Adam at the moment.

I haven't seen enough of McCarthy. Is he much better than Jay Spearing?
He's a totally different player.

Think Fabregas as opposed to Spearing (in terms of style, not ability, obv).

Do we need him then? We've already got Gerrard and Ming for that central attacking midfield position. Not to mention Aquilani if we can't agree a fee with Juve.

Is he good enough to improve us and get the team going if his team-mates are playing poorly?
Yes, he is good enough to improve us. Straight away our starting XI would be better.
Would he get others going? Not sure on that score just yet, he is still quite young.
I think he could grow and develop in the same way Gerrard has, he rarely gets people going when team mates are playing poorly either. He's never been known as a vocal captain.

Also, at Wigan, McCarthy would be surrounded by some pretty limited players and maybe feels shouting at guys who can't do better would have a negative affect? Maybe, maybe not but I think it is possible.

I like him, but if we're getting a midfielder surely it has to be a LM or RM
We need a left sided AM and a CM and I'd say we'll buy one of each.

I disagree on Gerrard, Stu. There have been countless occasions where he's risen above the level of his team mates and got us a draw or win when the team has been playing poorly.

As Gene said, Gerrard doesn't shout at players... he elevates the teams capabilities on his own. That's what I meant.

We have too many players that are reliant on everything going to plan in order to perform. We need more players that can turn games around for us when we're struggling for whatever reason.

I think that depends on whether you think Lucas is good enough to start for us every week.
I don't and would like to see a CM of Gerrard & McCarthy as first choice next year with Lucas around the squad to fill in when needed.

I'm inclined to agree. That's why I'm a lot happier about Suarez than I am about Carroll.

Is McCarthy ready to sit on the bench? Not sure.

As it stands we're getting:

CB: 1st choice Jones (£8-10 Million)/ 2nd Cahill (£12-15 Million)
LB: 1st Enrique (£8-12 Million) / 2nd Baines (£12-15 Million)
CM: 1st McCarthy (£6-8 Million) / 2nd Adam (£7-10 Million)
ST: Wickham (£8-10 Million)

Might be one our most expensive summers ever, to bad it won't be any exciting world class players joining. The value of British players is a joke.( Estimates are from the papers)

Yeah, I would agree with you there Ken.
Right now, I don't think there is a young CM out there who could improve us dramatically in the short term and over the next 7/8 years.
He wouldn't be capable of a piece of magic like Suarez or Kuyt to change a game but he wouldn't stall the play with slow movement and sideways passing. I think we would attack far better with quicker ball from CM. Whats more he'd add a much needed bit if steel too, he really can tackle very well.

This would be a great long term buy for us provided we eased him into the set up and didnt play him as a left winger or something daft like that. He will be serious player in about 18 months with the right coaching, at $7m its a bit of a gamble but I think his value will be 2 or 3 times that two years from now

that price is not a gamble in light of his potential, current ability now and his sell on ability if things dont work out.

We wont get him for 7m. Wigan recognize that and we will have to pay top dollar. I am thinking 15 million minimum.

If they ask for £15 Million they can go *** themselves.
Hopefully he'll get disappointed and turn in a transfer request.
