Didn't you advocate paying £15-20m for cahill though?
[/quote]15 sure but never 20.
There's also a big difference in quality and experience regarding those two players.

Although to be fair, we've got more pressing needs if we're gonna splash out £15m on someone. I'd love McCarthy though.

*hopes Wigan get relegated*

Mel Johnson, our new scout, was at Villa park yesterday watching McCarthy. Or Young/Downing for that matter.

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is determined to hang on to his young midfielder James McCarthy.

The Latics are still batting against relegation and, should they go down, will face problems keeping hold of their best players.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs are all reportedly interested in the Republic of Ireland international.

However, Martinez said: "I don't think he's reached his full potential with Wigan. He's well aware of that.

“I think James knows he can progress a lot at Wigan for another period, especially if we stay up.
He has an important part to play in that, because the reason James is playing in the manner he is at the age of 20 is that he's a winner.

"When you're a winner you don't want to face relegation and you don't want to lose a challenge. Happily, that feeling runs right through our squad. Nobody is going to stop his step to the next level eventually. I have no doubts James is going to play at the highest level of European football.

"He's going to be involved in Champions League football because he's got that talent - but it's the timing that is so important. It has to be right. He was playing in the first team at Hamilton at the age of 15 and did not leave them until he achieved his potential with them.

"I feel he has a little bit longer here to experience a few different things before he moves on.
But we'll be the first ones to be proud and delighted for James when he moves on because he's been a real ambassador for Wigan."

Rather McCarthy than Adam any day

Here here.
Charlie Adam only had a good patch of form this season and is now back to his mediocre standard.

If Kenny is so set on bringing in a Scotsman, McCarthy is the way to go 😉

LIVERPOOL’S interest in Latics midfielder James McCarthy looks all but over after the Reds secured the signature of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson yesterday.

Kenny Dalglish has been keeping a close eye on McCarthy, who played an instrumental role in securing survival for Latics last season.

And despite Liverpool still interested in bolstering their midfield selection, they’re now set to focus on Blackpool’s Charlie Adam with Stewart Downing and Connor Wickham.

Latics have slapped a £20m price tag on their Irish international which Liverpool have been reluctant to even come close to.

And with all three of their other targets expected to cost the Reds less, they are set to turn their attentions on them.
