Diogo Jota - died in car crash RIP

There’s an urban legend that there has never been a fatality in an XC 90. They’re the ultimate dadmobile and expecting to have to get one as my next upgrade
i dragged my wife out to get the safest car possible when we suddenly found ourselves with kids and of course landed in the volvo showroom looking at xc90’s. the biggest surprise is that they were a lot more expensive than bmw x5’s at the time. brace yourself.

Are Volvo cars considered the 'safest' based on recent analysis or historical data (reputation)? Surely there are a raft of SUVs that should be safer just by virtue of height and modern safety features.

it’s not volvo cars that i’m aware of being super safe, it’s specifically the xc90 that had the reputation of nobody ever dying in one. this was around 2019 so i don’t think the SUV market in the UK was quite so saturated.

A quick Google on the world's safest cars. Data from Euro Ncap, Car & Driver, Carwow, Whatcar. What really surprised me was the high ratings now given to Chinese made cars that have come a long way in 10 years (so I've highlighted them in Red). What's also noticeable is that no Volvo cars appear in any of the Top 10 lists (though Polestar, the racing offshoot from Volvo, do).

Tesla Model 3 (scored 359/400 in Euro NCAP testing)(not sure if this is the US or Chinese version)
Mercedes E Class : 353/400
Zeekr X : 348/400
VW ID7 : 346/400
NIO ET5 : 345/400
Polestar 3 : 345/400

Smart 3 : 345/400
Audi Q6 : 344/400
Zeekr 001 : 344/400
Mazda CX 80 : 343/400

On Euro NCAP's own site it gives as overall winners :
1st Chery Tigo 7 (SUV)
2nd Chery Tigo 8 (SUV)

3rd Ford Tourneo (Van)
4th Hyundai Inster
5th Lynk & Co 02 (mini SUV)
6th Omoda 9
7th Polestar 4
8th Zeekr 7X

9th Audi Q5
10th Ford Tourneo

On Euro NCAP's own site for FAMILY CARS it gives as overall winners :
1st BYD Sealion
2nd Polestar 3
3rd Tesla 3 (not sure if this is the US or Chinese version)
Mercedes E Class : 353/400
4th Audi A6
5th Zeekr 7X
6th Voyah Courage

7th Cupra Terramar
8th Geely EX5
9th Hongqi EX59
10th Lynk & Co 02 (mini SUV)

Yeah that's got to be an urban myth.

1. Daily Driver (Luxury + Tech + Comfort)

For something smooth, high-tech, and refined that doesn't scream "supercar":

  • Mercedes-Benz S-Class (Maybach S680) – Supreme comfort, understated power.
  • Range Rover SV – Perfect for UK roads, refined and capable in any weather.
  • Tesla Model S Plaid – For tech, speed, and zero-emissions daily use.

🏎️

You’ll want at least one head-turning monster in the collection:

  • Ferrari 296 GTB – Hybrid V6, sensational drive and future-forward.
  • McLaren 765LT – Track-focused British engineering at its best.
  • Lamborghini Revuelto (V12 Hybrid) – Madness and theatre in one package.

🚘

For cross-country trips or date nights:

  • Bentley Continental GT Speed – British luxury meets grand touring power.
  • Aston Martin DB12 – Stunning design and a refined twin-turbo V8.
  • Porsche 911 Turbo S – Fast, reliable, and everyday-usable grand tourer.

🏁

For the weekend and long-term appreciation:

  • Porsche 911 GT3 RS or GT2 RS – Precision and value retention.
  • Ferrari SF90 Stradale – Hyper-hybrid with massive power.
  • Pagani Huayra / Koenigsegg Jesko – If you want something ultra-rare and exclusive.

🚙

Because sometimes you just need something practical (or to haul things):

  • Mercedes-AMG G63 – Rugged luxury with presence.
  • Audi RS Q8 – Subtle but extremely fast and practical.
  • Toyota Land Cruiser / Defender 130 – For when you go countryside or off-road.

Porsche, Aston and Bentley for luxury and comfort. I’ll get the full list.

Borderline disrespectful to continue this in this thread. But if I were earning 7m a year I think i'd basically have a car for every use / season

- Range Rover Sport
- Some sort of epic convertible, Jag F Type one of my 'dream' cars that is semi obtainable so maybe not for this list
- Definitely as Aston Martin, probably a Vantage
- Something red with a ferrari badge

If flying insects were big and tame enough to sit on, what would you have?

I'd have a bumblebee for day-to-day stuff and a hornet for the weekend.

I wanted a cool sports car when I was a kid / younger. These days I just want to drive a vehicular sofa. Comfort is king.
Like one of those American RVs that have swivel armchairs for the driver and passenger's seats.

Tons of articles saying it is true - https://www.google.com/search?q=xc9...IMjYwOWowajeoAgCwAgA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Anecdotal 100% but one of my mates is a hobby bobby (special police) and he said Volvo won't "let" the police use XC90s for this very reason (to undo the record) but I am inclined to believe that is BS.

I did do a quick search on it. And it appears that there has been one family killed in a XC90

When a container fell off a lorry and onto the panoramic roof.

Not sure you can count it though. Seems very niche.

They’re just expensive hunks of metal with rubber wheels.

Meh.

That depends on what the container was filled with. Bricks? OK, the vovlo is not at fault. But if it was filled with helium balloons you'd expect better.

be interesting to see if this changes the clubs policy. i imagine hot blooded young men are inextricably tied to sexy fast cars but i’m guessing there are plenty of activities players are contractually not allowed or insured to partake in. motorbikes, paragliding, jetskis, scuba diving? can’t be that big a stretch to try extending this to the choice of cars?

Over 1 million XC90s sold since it started production. I still think that's a propagated urban myth. Statistically impossible ?!

If there were one poster on SCM who would have the desire, skills and determination to find this out - it would be the Frogfish

I do wonder if there should be some sort of further license to drive cars over a certain BHP. It's pretty wild there isn't already when there is on bikes. Loads of revenue to generation and safer roads. It doesn't detract from the sadness, but there's no denying there is something fundamentally stupid speeding in a supercar, especially when you have a wife and three kids at home and a brother by your side and the wealth to build your own fucking race track if you really wanted. Blah.

Mine would be near identical :

Range Rover Sport or the new Xiaomi YU7

Aston Martin Vantage - what a gorgeous car

Jag E type convertible as per this one my friend lent me for a trip to Scotland !

Electric cars are pushing that limit further - or should I say bringing it to the masses. The new Xiaomi SU7 does 0-100kph in 2.78 secs. the absolute fastest Ferraris do it in 2.5 secs.

Yeah I think this makes sense. No relation to this incident, but I also think drivers should re-do their test every 10/15 years. Far too many people on the road who are simply unfit to drive.

I don't think Driving Tests bear any resemblance to real world driving though. 10-15 definitely too much. Maybe base it on points accumulated? If U21 then 4 points re-do, U25 6 points, U35 9 points.
