Diogo Jota - died in car crash RIP

No shit, it's a fucking sports car designed to go insanely fast. They're inherently dangerous.
There are minimum safety standards, looking how that car was crushed, I question if standards are rigorous enough. The Cyber Truck is banned in the EU and UK because it doesn't meet EU+Uk safety standards.

What was joyous about his finishing was he often appeared to be operating five seconds ahead of the defence and keeper. There's plenty of examples but the Everton winner summed it up. All of them touches looked pre-planned, like he already knew which way each defender would place his weight and which way the the keeper wanted him to go. They were the often the sort of finishers that you would do if you have 3 or 4 chances to rewind time and try again. It's why they look so clean.

Fowler has it in spades, Torres too at times. I'll never forget his first year where he just rocked up, everyone expected him to be backup LW and he just kept scoring off the bench, scoring some more, and scoring again. In doing so he forced his way into the team, as well as into the minds of opposition defenders, who quickly accepted that Diogo only needed a two moments to turn a game upside down.

😭

Translated content: "They had been together for over 12 years and faced all difficulties together. He tragically passed away 10 days after their wedding.

Diogo and Rute attended the same high school in Porto before they started dating in 2013, shortly before the beginning of the footballer's professional career.

After leaving Portugal, Jota signed with Atlético de Madrid in Spain in 2016, where he lost hope in his career due to very limited playing time. During that time, facing the challenges of the journey, Rute supported him tirelessly.

In 2017, when Diogo Jota moves to England and joins the Wolverhampton club, Rute Cardoso packs her bags and decides to follow him. From their union, Denis is born in February 2021, followed by Duarte in March 2023. In November 2024, a daughter brings joy to the Portuguese family.

After nearly 13 years of relationship, Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso decided to get married on June 22 in a simple and family-oriented ceremony, surrounded by their loved ones, in a church in Portugal."

What to say? What can anyone say at a time like this when the shock and the pain is so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words but I know I do not.

All I have are feelings that I know so many people will share about a person and a player we loved dearly and a family we care so much about.

My first thoughts are not those of a football manager. They are of a father, a son, a brother and an uncle and they belong to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva who have experienced such an unimaginable loss.

My message to them is very clear – you will never walk alone. The players, the staff, the supporters of Liverpool Football Club are all with you and from what I have seen today, the same can be said of the wider family of football.

This is not solely a response to tragedy. It is also a reaction to the goodness of the people involved and the respect that so many have for the boys as individuals and for the family as a whole.

For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us. He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate and in all of those roles he was very special.

I could say so much about what he brought to our team but the truth is everyone who watched Diogo play could see it. Hard work, desire, commitment, great quality, goals. The essence of what a Liverpool player should be.

There were also the parts that not everyone got to see. The person who never sought popularity but found it anyway. Not a friend to two people, a friend to everyone. Someone who made others feel good about themselves just by being with them. A person who cared deeply for his family.

The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him luck for his forthcoming wedding. In many ways, it was a dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that it should end like this.

When I first came to the club, one of the first songs I got to know was the one that our fans sing for Diogo. I had not worked with him previously but I knew straight away that if the Liverpool supporters, who have seen so many great players over the years, had such a unique chant for Diogo, he must have special qualities.

That we have lost those qualities in such terrible circumstances is something we have not yet come to terms with. For this reason, we need everyone at the club to stand together and to be there for one another. We owe this to Diogo, to Andre Silva, to their wider family and to ourselves.

My condolences go to Diogo’s wife, Rute, their three beautiful children and to the parents of Diogo and Andre Silva.

When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song. For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten.

His name is Diogo.

That’s really nice.

On behalf of the leadership teams at Liverpool Football Club and Fenway Sports Group, we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our number 20, Diogo Jota, and his brother Andre Silva.

This tragic situation and the reality of it is truly shocking, devastating and has left us numb with grief. We therefore cannot imagine how the immediate and wider family of these remarkable brothers must be feeling. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with them all.

We all know what Diogo could do on the field of play and the vital role he played in our successes since he joined this club in 2020. How he quickly became a firm fan favourite, and his song reverberated around Anfield and in stadiums across the world.

So many special moments, so many special memories.

But beyond the player that we all knew was a wonderfully humble human being, he was sincere, intelligent, funny, tough and created connections with people everywhere he went.

He had a zest for life that was utterly contagious. Diogo was a loving father, son, husband and brother, and we, and everyone who knew him, will miss him deeply as we all try to process the enormity of today.

Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. You Will Never Walk Alone.

Billy, John, Tom, Mike.

very depressing, even though my kids are young i do worry about the time when they’re beyond my control, out in the world doing their own thing.

i doubt you ever recover from losing two children like this, it’s so horrible for their family.

Man, I can't believe it, I don't wanna believe it.
Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief.
What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man.

You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family.

A champion forever, number 20 forever. It's been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it.

We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it!

Rest in perfect peace Diogo & André.

Indeed. It can be argued he never left.

Personally I'd like it to be retired for 20 years. Make it timebound.

His funeral is tomorrow.
It would be beautiful if we retire it for 20 years and in that time one of his sons become good enough to play for us to take the shirt.

To add some context before we go into it, Diogo Jota suffered an injury earlier in the season which left him with a lung injury, which is something he had to contend with during the remainder of the season.

Diogo Jota's respiratory physiotherapist Miguel Goncalves:

"I started working with him last Saturday and I was with him every day until this Wednesday. I said goodbye to him at dinner time,'
'He made an extraordinary recovery, he was undoubtedly an unparalleled professional.

He strictly followed what I told him, as you could see in the way he was recovering.

'The base of his right lung had collapsed a little, but with the post-surgery physiotherapy he was practically flawless. When I left him yesterday he was no longer in pain and was going to return to Liverpool.

'He was excited, confident in his recovery and enthusiastic about the next season. He told me that he would not go on the pre-season tour that Liverpool is going to Japan to strengthen his recovery, he believed he was going to have a great season.'

That Robbo tribute cuts deep. Joking that he’s Irish, calling him MacJotta.

I hadn’t paid very close attention to him off the pitch around the club but it sounds like he was an absolutely legend who lite up every room he was in.

I never truly understand people getting as upset about celebrities they’ve never met dying but this is like losing a close friend. Horrible horrible feeling and I don’t know him at all even if feels like I do a little reading all these stories.

It must be unimaginable for the family and friends 🙁

As someone currently watching my dad fade out as my kids bounce around, mostly oblivious, with all the energy in the world, it's too much, life sometimes, and I'm not sure I'm all that good at it.

I hope that his wife is a strong strong woman, because that would just break me in places deep inside I can't even bear to look at.

I think I’m getting more upset as time passes.

So many shit things happening this week.

Kelleher posts a magic tribute too very similar to Robbo. Seems at least Robbo and Kelleher were at the wedding.

It really is a heartbreaking story, even more so when hear how much he lite up others lives around.
